Yes, it's normal to go back after two days, and not one. Dry sockets can hurt for a week or so. Avoid smoking and/or drinking out of straws, as the sucking on straws or cigarettes loosens the blood clot/packing/paste, which causes more pain.

I have dry socket RIGHT NOW. They packed it yesterday morning. That no more pain feeling will go away by bedtime but it won't hurt as bad as it did before. Just take 800 mg Ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) every 6 hours or so. Its an antiinflamitory and dry socket is an inflamation so it will help. The dressing stuff helps keep food particles out so that you don't have it heal around a piece of food. If the packing comes out go back do your dentist asap and have him fill it again.

Dry socket hurts like heck and can last several weeks. Especially if you are allergic to the oils they put in the gauze, as I am.
While you wait for your next dental visit, you can do a couple of things. First, get a small medicine dropper...it will prove to be important! You can drip a few drops of liquid children's ibuprofen into the wound every couple of hours. It will help bring down the inflamation and help with the pain. You can also put a few drops of liquid anesthetic (Anbesol or the like) into the hole.
You can ask your dentist for prescription pain medication if Tylenol or Motrin aren't doing the trick.
Best of luck to you!

If you have a dry socket, you need to call your dentist. Usually, depending on the time you call, they will ask you to come in that day or the next day. Your dentist should have explained that to you. Man, don't they hurt like hell!? I went through that twice. Another thing. Don't spit or drink through a straw, it will get worse. If you have a build-up of saliva, just take a napkin and wipe your mouth out. Good luck!
