Volunteer.
Pick one thing you feel absolutely must be changed, or will impact the most people if changed. Then step forward.
I chose health, and have been working 30 years for better health in the communities I live in.
What I have helped to change: fluoride in the water so kids have stronger teeth. A closed hospital turned into a large thriving health center with its own x-ray, pharmacy, urgent care center and site for training new doctors, nurses and pharmacists. Higher rates of mammography so more women living after cancer. A resource center at a cancer treatment center that anyone can access, allowing patient and community empowerment.
From volunteer work, you can learn skills that help you move forward from one job to the next, bettering your own life and your family's- and making an impact at the same time.

As some of the others suggested, the main way to make a positive impact in your community is to get involved. You can do that through volunteering or helping out some of your local non-profit organizations that meet real community needs.

Through my volunteer center, I tutor children at the local library, enhance visitor experience at the local museum, package food at the local food bank, and a lot of other diverse projects.

Check out your local volunteer center through the following links:

The other option is to try the local chapter of the United Way. They also specialize in volunteer placement:

Good luck!

don't just get involved in current volunteer organisations.Even though these are great, learn to take the initiative and start the ball rolling. start up help in your community or create sponsored events. I personally have worn a wedding dress for a day (24 hours) including having to wear it to school to raise money for an old school friend who lost her legs to meningitis. As I arranged it and the money went straight to her it stopped a charity from taking a percentage for "admin". There are many other ways such as simply litter picking in parks to make people feel better about their surroundings or helping out in community centres, retirement homes etc. Once you have an area of interest try to get friends and others to join in too. making helping fun and interesting can help get people motivated.

As Gandhi said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." Keep a positive attitude and finds ways to make a meaningful difference or impact in other's lives. It does not matter how large or small, just the energy creates change.

Outstanding Question !!!! -- The ONLY legislation that Obama ever enacted as Illinois State Senator was a bill REDUCING CriminaL Penalties for Gang related Murders in Illinois. BTW - When Obama ran for State Senator in 1006; Obama ran on the " New Party " Ticket which was the Chicago Branch of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Another way is to gather together all the good, positive news that you can, and share it with the people in the community..... and constantly (as much as is possible) continue being a positive reinforcement, in their lives.

im opening a homeless shelter so they can realise that there are people out there willing to help... the world is full of hate and it riddles our news instead of headlining the good in the world... we all need to do our part even if it is just volunteering your services for a few hours.. buying a homeless person a meal.... donating things you no longer need.... even just giveing a homeless person a buck to cheer them up and make their life seem ok for a while

I like to think that my son and his friends are welcome to out home any time it gives them a place to hang out and not on the streets, we have movie night and game night and just hang out time, his friends come on occassion just to talk to me, I like the idea that they have a safe place and not be on the street getting blamed for something they did not do
