Taking an anti-motility drug like diphenoxylate or loperamide can delay the excretion of the germ from the body and can make the infection persist for a longer time. Also, antibiotics can destroy the normal gut flora and make the germ persist longer, if it is a virus or is resistant to the drug.

Infections are caused by bacteria. If a person has a bacterial infection in their intestines, rather than just an irritation that is causing diarrhea, they will know it, trust me. There is nothing wrong with taking a medicine to alleviate the symptoms of diarrhea. It will not induce bacterial growth.
