Perfectally natural under proper conditions. First certain particulates must be in the air 2) the angle of the Earth facing the Sun and 3) moisture in the air. The same can be said about the rare phenomnon known as the green flash at sunrise . while rather rare, (i only seen twice) it is based on the same principal. So are the Northern and Southern lights.

The sun is actually yellow (spectral G2V).

It only appears red because the sunlight is travelling through the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in color differentiation. As the sun sets, the light moves through more atmosphere, worsening the colour differentiation.
