it may cause renal impairment, nephrophaty, nephritis and renal failure, due to components in Asacol converting to mesalamine, which targets its toxicity towards kidneys, but this is a seldom side-effect in otherwise healthy patients.

I had serious issues with Asacol exacerbating a pre-existing renal issue. If you do get it, just make sure you kidneys are healthy first and have your doc keep track of kidney function. If you notice any serious changes in urine output etc, call your doc.
