i've had my carpets down for nearly 4 years. They were average priced (not dead cheap) but am concerned their not looking very good anymore. How long should they last and does professional cleaning help?

Most carpet manufacturers warrant their products for more than 4 years, thus they should last at least as long as they are warranted. That being said, most people void their warranties by using products to spot clean or professionally clean their carpets. Before having them professionally cleaned, see what the manufacturer of your carpet recommends. Most of our manufacturers receommend vacuuming at least weekly and professionally dry cleaning annually. Many of the manufaturers will void their warranties if you wet or steam clean your carpet. Since your carpet is only 4 years old, I suspect it is still warranted for stain and performance as long as you met the care requirements. After you check to see what the manufacturer requires for having your carpet cleaned, see whether you have a warranty issue. Proper professional cleaning of carpet extends the life of the carpet, removes dust and dirt that accumulates deep into the carpet fiber and baking as well as brightens the appearance of the carpet.

Depends on the amount of work they have done and how you have cared for them. They should last longer than 4 years if a good heavy make. Go for a professional cleaner and at the same time ask their opinion. If they are not fitted could you not move them round so the wear moves to a different area of the room.

cleaning them does help...you can even rent a cleaning machine if you dont have one yourself....try covering your high traffic areas with a runner or throw rug after you clean them to prevent further damage. Typical carpets can last anywhere from 7-10 years...depending on the family. One thing i learned is that investing in a higher quality carpet (like shag) runs you less money in the end.

A good 10 years at least. We always take our shoes off in the house and vacuum at least once every other day as it is the dirt that erodes them. If you can afford it, professional cleaning once a year also helps.
