i have a budget of £1500 and need to subtract from it at regular intervals throughout the year so i know how much i have left .

you need to enter an equation into one of the "cells". First type the equals sign, so that Excel recognises it as an equation and then type "1500-x" (x is whatever the amount is that is needed to be taken off)

Easy peasy pick a column e.g. A format it as currency and as a safety check choose - numbers in red, format column B as date. In cell A1 enter £1500 and in cell A14 (or so) enter =sum(A1:A13) and then when you have to spend some of your money, enter in the A column -£100 (or whatever) and the date in B and Bobs your uncle.
