Just calm yourself, kill the every bit of doubt in your mind, practice what you're going to say, walk up to him, look him in the eyes, and ask him.
If you have any guy friends, try getting them to help you.
Good Luck.
Oh! I almost forgot. Whatever you do: avoid rambling. It will shatter the calmness in your mind like a baseball through a window.
And don't chicken out, it will make you weaker and it will make it harder in the future.
Also try to bring it up casualy: get into a conversation and then casually bring it up, like this.
"Yeah my friends and me are gonna have a great time at the prom, oh and by the, I just remembered that I don't have a date for the prom, would you be my date ."
Just be smooth and stay calm and it should work like a charm, don't hesitate to tell us answerers how it goes, we're here to help......except that guy who made that "what are you smoking" remark, he's just an A Hole.

Girl friend- DONT DO IT!!!! If u start going out after the prom, and work with him, It will be fine @work for a couple a months, but u both will be jealous, if u both do not work in the same department and then have your lunch together, someone comes in to talk you or him, after the conversation. Thats where the jealousy begins. You both will be mad, and not want to see each @ work. U or him will be saying I do not want to see, or talk to u @ work.

Best thing to do is just ask him. Don't beat around the bush about it. If you go into this expecting him to say NO then you won't get your feelings hurt. You never know thou it could be a huge Yes. Won't know if you don't ask. Just remember it's been a few years since his prom and he might think he's to old. Good luck

Why not just say " would you like to go to the prom with me?" or "I'd like to go to the prom and don't have a date yet...would you be interested?"
