I have something called 'cat-a-lax', which is vaseline with some flavoring added, for when my elderly cat is constipated. It says to put a little on the cat's paw as an earlier poster described, well for my cat that doesn't work! I tried that when he first needed it, a couple hours later there was brown sticky paste on the carpet, the bed, the chairs, and the cat, he was mad as h*ll but he hadn't licked it at all! Now I put the dose on my finger and stick it in his throat sortof as if I were to give him a pill but then I rub it off on the corner of his mouth. I'm sure some cats lick it off, but mine didn't!
And make *sure* it's poo'ing that isn't working... constipation isn't quite as serious, you can try an over-the-counter or home med for a day or so (although if it's longer than that you'll still need to see a vet), but if it's a urinary tract blockage or infection instead, that can be fatal in a very short time! Especially if it's a male, chances are he has kidney stones that block the urinary tract.

If the cat is straining, that means it needs to go now. The real answer is to assist it from the rear end. Most Vets will give you over the counter enema solution in a syringe type applicator. If not, try to find an applicator at a pet store like pet smart. Take luke warm water with some brand name dish soap in it. Just enough to make it slick. Place Kittie over a towel or a pan of sorts. Give it an enema, and place your finger over the anus opening for a few seconds. See if Kittie has a movement. It should. I know this is not a pleasant job, but throwaway plastic gloves might make it easier. Good luck, as this might be a matter you need to address right away.

Just go to any pet store and ask for a petroleum based medication (over-the-counter). Most cats do not like the taste regardless what the tube says. Use about a 1/2 inch ribbon pressed into the top of the front paw. The cat has to lick it off. The medicine usually works in about 12 hours. Do Not use regular petroleum jelly. It will make the cat very sick. The best way to stop this problem is to avoid table scraps and milk.. Make sure the cat food has plenty of vegetables in it, and Omega 3 fatty acids.

Try giving it yogurt and turkey baby food. Not many cats will turn either away, the baby food being best of the two.. This will loosen the stool. If the problem persists make sure to take the cat to the vet, there could be something causing a blockage in the intestinal tract. GL to kitty!

You can try the other things people have posted but I just wanted to mention ...Please watch your cat very closely. There could be a number of things that could be causing him not being able to go to the bathroom. None of which has to do with constipation. if the cat starts looking bloated take him to the vet asap. I would recommend taking him to the vet before then anyways..just to make sure there isnt a blockage or a rupture in his stomach.

The cat needs to be checked out by a vet immediately as the poor thing may have ingested something that is blocking the intestines and could ultimately kill it. Please do not wait or the cat could die. Any change in a cats litter box habits are usually a sign of something wrong.

get some laxatone at pet smart and give a large dose of that to him. keep doing that for the next few days as long as the cat is still eating and drinking and not vomiting, it should be alright, but if it goes more than 3 or so days I would call the vet to make sure there isn't an obstruction.

my cat was just recently constipated. we asked the vet what we could do to help and he said that if you give the cat a teaspoon of pumpkin (yes pumpkin the stuff that looks all mashed up inside the can) every other hour, the cat should poop fairly quickly, within the next day or so.

take him to the vet straight away!!!!! if he's trying and nothings happening then something is very wrong. don't leave it too late cos if its something serious you want to catch it while it can still be treated. --- soz for being so bossy it's cos i just lost a kitty with constipation 3 wks ago, it turned out to be a really aggressive tumour in the intestines.....it's probably not that serious in such a young cat (my cat was 12yrs old) but just make sure.

I would take the cat to the vet's as soon as poss. If he's straining and trying to go, there could be a blockage, which would make him ill very quickly. At least phone a vet and ask their advice.
