Because they don't understand it. As I can see by some of the other answers everyone just assumes that if you join the army you'll be in combat. So they worry about you. I joined the army but my job doesn't neccesarily include combat duties. People overlook the fact the military is a good way for a young man to get the training, education and sound financial security that is needed to succede in the real world.

But in regards to family and friends they will always worry about you because of the fact that you'll be gone. They'd worry about you in any occupation where you could be half way around the world for a year.

Because the Army has the lowest standards. The ASVAB scores it takes to join the Army are considerably less that what it takes to join the other services. Meaning....they want dumb people to fill body bags. There are many people who view the Army as just a step above going to prison. If you join the Army, yes you will be sent to Iraq and most likely be put in a very dangerous position before you're properly trained but you will also have to pust your trust in thugs and petty criminals who had no where else to go in life so they joined the Army.

Because it's not considered a "safe world" right now. I salute you for your service. I'm proud of you and what you risk for your country.

I am in the Air Force and just came back from Iraq. The bodies being dropped off by helicoptors were all army and marine people. It's not an easy sight.

I watched those helicoptors come in every night the whole time I was in Iraq. I've been in for 20 years, and I love the military. HOWEVER-- If my son were to join right now, I'd STRONGLY encourage the Navy or the Air Force. That's just because I would be scared my son would come home in a bag.

Well as me if think your brave young man that should be proud of what choice you made. God Bless You. Be safe. The other people like there choice of freedom but don't want 2 help 2 keep it.
There will always be people that will like your choice. So learn as much as you can.Get into a field that you can use when you come back home.

No matter what you do, or don't do, there will be people you know who will criticize you for it. I went through the entire World War Two in the infantry. I enlisted long before the war started, and didn't get out 'till over two years after it ended. I've never been sorry.

MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE:

Unlike the V.N. war your older than 18-19.
You've had the chance to see the U.S. can be wrong.
You've been to lazy to study the Kennedy assassination and see exactly who causes these wars.
You've never read a newspaper to know the world is crying for you to stop this, and start acting like a human being.
MAYBE ITS BECAUSE:
People know your moral-less and will hurt ANY innocent for $1000 a month. And that you'll kill to steal oil. (And that, for another man? LOL)

As a V.N. Vet myself...the reason I won't drink a beer with an Iraqi Vet is not because he's a vet.
Its because "Why would I want to sit with a lazy uneducated moral-less 22yo brainwashed punk?"

That would be the liberals not people. People like myself honor your joining the Army as we do anyone who chooses to fight in the US Military. You're joining your country in it's efforts to stop and evil force.

I'm going to assume that the ones who do not like the idea are your family & friends who will worry about you. I know I would feel that way if you were my son or brother or husband. But thank God there are young men & women like you who are willing to serve our country, we would be in big trouble without you & appreciate the work you do. God speed!
