Can't you get him contacts? That is a super tough one - does he have to wear them all the time during school?

There are so many new types of frames these days that will make him look so handsome. Tell him that the kids may make fun of him at 1st.. but it is only because they are jealous that they do not have some cool glasses like his. I can remember having to wear glasses at that young age and I am 33 now.. those were the times of thick plastic frames. So lucky for him glasses now have more appeal. Good luck.

What does he think people are laughing at him?
I would have him pick out the glasses
Some are cool
Tell him, that they will help him in school
Does he needs the glasses all the time?
One of the girls in my daughter class, just needs them in the class room for reading\
Good luck

I just found out my 4 year old son has astigmatism and will have to get glasses! I am feeling the same thing you are. We want our children to be well liked so its hard. I havent really said anything to him except that he gets to wear glasses like daddy. Right now he thinks that cool but he hasnt got them yet so I am not sure how he will feel then. I am not really going to make a big deal out of it right now. If he comes home from preschool (he will go in Aug) and says any of the kids have said something I will tell him they are probably just playing with him but for him to tell the other kids that they are hurting his feelings.
good luck

My daughter had to get glasses a year ago, she was 6. I told her that she is in a growing population. More and more kids are having to get glasses at a younger age. She was afreaid of the same thing. What I did was let her teacher know that she was getting glasses and the day she want to school with them, she did just fine. Now it is just an everyday thing, she puts her glasses on and goes to school...no problem.

I have two sons that both wear glasses. Honestly - neither have had any problems but both were extremely worried. My older one - now 12 - switched to contacts this year but not because of being made fun of, he likes girls now and is worried about his appearance.
Kids nowadays are a lot more accepting of differences than we give them credit for.
Also, I got both of them auto-dimming glasses for sunlight. The other kids thought that was kind of cool - especially since none of the rest of them had "shades" on at recess.

Tell him that kids won't make fun of him. Most kids won't make fun of kids with glasses. I got glasses at a young age, and I have never really had any problems with it. Also tell him that if the kids make fun of him, they are immature and not worth his time! You could also try bribing him, by telling him that if he gets glasses now, and takes good care of them, maybe in the future your could get him contacts! Every kid, that wears glasses and hates them, dream is too get contacts... i just got my and love them! Hope this helps!

My 7 year old daughter recently got glasses in February and she chose a purpley-pink color and I wanted to change her mind to something that she would always look good in but the optometrist thought that if she liked the color and the look then she would want to wear them no matter what other kids said.

Aww he will look adorable!! Yes he will be very self conscious at first but if you act excited about him wearing them, and he gets to pick the style he thinks is cool then it will be easier to handle. Also once he gets to school and sees that he will not lose friends b/c of them he will also ease up. Also speak with the teacher and let her know his fears of being laughed at and maybe she can say something before he gets to school.

I let my son pick out his own glasses....I didn't care for them, but he thought they were cool and it made it alot easier

We went throught the same thing. My daughter just had to start wearing glasses. The first day, her teacher wore her glasses instead of contacts to show her support. And yes, sometimes she does get teased. I tell her that sometimes children tease because they just don't understand or because they think it's funny. If you don't react or laugh along with them, the teasing stops. One of my friend's last name is Lowdermilk. His dad told him whenever someone starting making fun of his name, he should just join in and take the sting out of it. It worked. Tell your little boy that if someone does start teasing he should just shrug and say, yeah, glasses are yucky but I hated walking into walls. Then just walk away.
