Seems like people used to anoint all the time.
Why don't we anoint anymore? Maybe we could bring it back....you know, kind of a fad, like hip hugger pants.

They do still annoint...it's now called aftershave and perfume and I do wish they would LEARN that a little can be TOO MUCH!

Anointing is done by using consecrated virgin oil unto the Lord and then placing a drop or two on the crown of the head.

The additional steps are sacred and needn't be shown here.

This is an ordinance that can never be a fad nor joked about. It is serious unto the Lord and to the faithful.

back in the day oil was a hot commodity. It gave light at night, was scented and so covered up the smell of people that probably didn't bathe too often, etc. Some oils were fancy, some were meant to be burned, so if you have a fancy oil and pour it on someones head its kind of like pouring diamonds or something on their head...they often did it instead of putting a crown on someones head.....Anointing signified being specially chosen for a purpose, usually with religious overtones, as well as being sanctified. Its pretty simple, you just apply some oil to someones head and usually a blessing of some sort goes with it.

Well, here's the dictionary definition from Dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/anoint ):

Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) - Cite This Source
–verb (used with object)
1. to rub or sprinkle on; apply an unguent, ointment, or oily liquid to.
2. to smear with any liquid.
3. to consecrate or make sacred in a ceremony that includes the token applying of oil: He anointed the new high priest.
4. to dedicate to the service of God.

According to this definition we still anoint anytime we apply lotion, cream or ointment (like for dry skin, infected wounds, diaper rash, athlete's foot, etc.) so I don't think we need to worry about bringing it back.

Peace!

the reason is you must have authority to anoint... no Joe Bob Jr. can decide to anoint. The apostles were given authority to anoint by Jesus Christ... It's called the Holy Priesthood and can only be passed from one person to another by laying on of hands by the proper worthy authority--and there's only one Church on earth with that authority-- and it's not catholic.

I helped the Pastor, Deacon and Elders anoint some sick people just yesterday and Sunday. Twice a week thing at my church.
You might be better informed if you went to church on Sundays.

how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because god was with him.
If you are writing about the ritual of anointing with oil, this is only a symbol, of the power Jesus gave us, smells pleasing though.

I learned in church that that is something you should leave to your pastor to do. If you're lucky, he'll anoint you.
