Many people put people in the military on a pedestal. I've even talked with many WWII soldiers and it's amazing the amount of respect many of them have for the German soldiers of WWII.

I was wondering .... do you view those that serve as being valiant or ... do you look at each one individually ???

Answer: That is a two part question. First serving a country, investing your life and honour is the most sincere expression of respect. Your question begs the comparison.
To take up arms for a cause gets a bit dicey, as far to many today do such, for anarchy and greed, or uncompromising ideology.
To be logical and honest the former deserves respect for their intent...
The latter has earned only contempt!

I see all soldiers who fight for their country as noble, regardless of what country they fight for.

I have had a number of conversations with Iraqi army soldiers who fought against us in the Gulf War. You almost get to the point where you feel like you guys were fighting together and not against each other.

They had some brave soldiers who never got to show their stuff.

There is honour in putting yourself in a position where you may have to put your life on the line for others or for your ideals. This applies to cops and firefighters as well.

Just as within the professions of law enforcement and fire fighting; soldiers may sully thier profession with acts of dishonour.

I put all Military on a pedastal...Without them we would not have the freedoms, rights and security we hold dear.
I would also hold those that were our enemies to the same standard....that is to say those that fought for a country..not insurgents or gorillas..That is a cowardly fashion of fighting.

I believe that the choice to put your country above yourself is an honorable choice. But, as with everything, generalizations are dangerous. I admire anyone who fights for the freedoms and safety of their homeland, but that doesn't mean that bad apples don't get into the barrel.

I look at them individually, but I end up finding most, if not all, as being valiant.

A profession is something one to which one brings, rather than takes, honor.

The profession of arms is a noble one, just like many others: medicine, law, law enforcement, etc. This is because most members of any profession conduct themselves according to its high standards.

I think the answer lies in the motivation. I think MOST of us that have been in the military have done so at least in part because we wanted to do what was right for our country.
I'm sure there are now - and have always been - soldiers who have done what they do for selfish reasons.
