You can but it will give you a different flavor.
Marsala has a very distinctive flavor. A diner would have no doubt about the fact that marsala was used in his dish-the flavor is that distinctive.
What marsala does not have in it's natural form is a salty taste. The salt is added to render it undrinkable and it is then labeled as " Cooking Wine . Never ever buy anything labeled "Cooking Wine "

You can substitute wines in cooking. As long as you can drink it you can cook with it. Don't use any cooking wines ever !!!
If it tastes good to you then it will taste good to cook with it. Just stick with similar wines. Reds with reds, whites with whites, etc.

madeira is kind os sweet i think and it wouldn't be as pugent and salty as marsala.
