I told my workmen that I will be away from home for a few days.
I know it was stupid thing to say.
What's the best I can do to prevent burglary?
What's the chance of my house being burgled whilst I'm away?

Ask a friend to stay there. Builders in the main, are not in the habit of burgling peoples homes. In any case you know who they are.

For starters, have a few good neighbors to help keep an eye on each other. Each house is a bit different. I have a watchdog in back and an in possible door to get into in the front. Make it hard for them. Security cameras. Report fishy activity in your area to the police (don't let them build up). A crook will usually stay out of an area that he will get busted in or has alot of heat. The police may not be perfect but for the most part they are your friend. Most cities offer a citizens police academy, take it, there is alot of good info on crime and self defense.

As far as your co-workers go, you may have screwed up. The sad fact is most people steal from people they know...

Chances are pretty good it will depending upon the character of those you told. As they say, "Stupid is as stupid does".

The best way to prevent burglary at this point is not to go anywhere. Next time, show some intelligence and don't tell anyone whom you don't trust 100%.

Chances are fairly good you will experience a break-in. In the event those workmen don't do it, your chances increase with every unsavory person they might tell.

I would hire someone (friend or family) to house-sit. Notify the police what you did. See what they suggest.

When I go away I tell my middle daughter and a neighbor. That way my daughter can come and check on things every day and the neighbor knows I am not at home so if they see anyone besides my middle daughter, they know to call the police.

Yeah, that was pretty dumb, but at least you're aware of it. The only thing I would reccomend you do is call your local police department and ask them if they can keep an eye on your house. If they don't then ask a friend or relative

It is very unwise to tell any stranger that you will be away from home for a specific time. This is an open invitation to be robbed.

Do you have any teenage nephews that aren't suicidal? Let one of them stay there for a few days and just pay him a little on the side to keep him sweet and remind him about your sky t.v assuming you have sky that is.

I guess I'd ask a friend to stay so there won't be a chance of anything happening.
