Not if you ask Tom Cruise!!

But seriously, I think it is because there is a medical/scientific basis to the discipline. There are chemical inbalances that can affect a person's mental health. The problem, I think, is that some people but too much emphasis on pharmacuetical solutions. Sometimes a person would benefit more from psychological counseling, but because they want to solve their problems with meds. they seek out a psychiatrist. Psychology prompts people, I think, more often to deal with issues and work through problem... take more responsibility for your actions and reaction.

I have had pyschological counseling, but never psychiatric.

That is not the issue. Is there a need for psychiatry ? Yes there is. Just like there is a need for religion. If you can invent something better then do so. It is a science as much as it is in the hands of a profession and regulated by law. We believe in the pure sciences but they too can't be too closely examined because science is still in an infant stage in our world. The science community will prevent any rapid change and can entertain us forever with TV science specials.

funny... if the pres of the APA can go on nationwide TV and say that there is no such thing as a clear cut test for chemical imbalance in the brain then how come some netizen can come on here and say that there is one? Do they have a better position from which to be an expert than the pres of the APA?
check out http://end-psych-abuse.info for a video where psychiatrists themselves admit that they have no science and no cures!

Just look up the definition of psychiatry. Every definition I've seen called it the science of diagnosing and treating mental illness.

I think it is, and the more time goes by, the more we know what psychiatric drugs work best for which disorders.

Sure it is. You should be more concerned whether scientology is a real religion.
