Well.. I read an article about aspartame... I'm never eating that crap again! First off, to answer your question... Aspartame makes you crave carbs, which will make you fat. It is in Nutrasweet, Equal, Spoonful, Diet Coke, and Diet Pepsi, and God knows what else.

Here's some nasty facts I learned: If tempurature of aspartame reaches above 86 degrees F, it converts to formaldehyde!

It can also cause Aspartame Disease- symptoms include fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting pains, numbness in the legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, memory loss, seizures.

Aspartame can be deadly for diabetics.

I've been hearing good things about a sweetener called Stevia. It supposedly helps metabolize sugar.

I hear that it's not the actual sugar replacer that makes you fat...it's the chemicals in the sweetener that makes you rave more food - especially more sugar. That's what makes people fatter.
I also read an article in a mag (I forgot what it's called, it has "Organic" in the title) that high fructose corn syrup, the most common artificial sweetener in drinks and processed food, is actually addictive. A nutritionist saw her son turn into a horrible, moody person because of all the soda, cookies, and candy bars he ate. When she eliminated those foods (containing HFCS), he was fine.
So, I guess the answer is yes.

Sugar replacements make you fatter by denying you carbohydrates, and your body craves more food so you eat more.
Despite what the diet industry tells you, carbohydrates don't make you "crave" more when you eat them. Your body needs some carbs, and sugar substitutes trick your body, so you end up eating more protein and fats to compensate for the urge.

Aspartame is poisonous to many people, and sucralose and saccharin just taste nasty.

its better to just toss in a teaspoon of sugar and be done with it, you are talking 10-15 calories here, its not a whole candy bar (which is 75% fat calories BTW).

Corn syrups are stealth diet killers, they require twice as much to sweeten as sugar and it can trigger allergies and make your blood glucose spike, making you dizzy or lethargic as your body tries to adjust.

because of the chemicals used in processing and making this function/taste like a sugar, thay may play a role in contributing to your subconscious weight gain. stick with natural sugar such as organic. you'll run into less processing and less junk at the end of the day.

just be as healthy as you can!
any replacement is unhealthy and un natural. Eat natural sugars, there are enough in normal foods.
normal sugar in moderation will not make you put on weight though .
fat and carbs do

It goes on the theory that you'll crave more and more sweets.

I take stevia, it's a natural sweetener, not derived from sugar, I have no problems.
