It's not that it's not healthy, it's just that wild rice and brown rice are better because they retain the bran.

White rice is extremely high in calories (about 250 per cup). Further, because it is a nutrional zero, it does very little to stave off hunger, which means you wind up eating more than you would eat if you had something more substantive.

An average potato has 100-150 calories, and has complex carbohydrates. Adding cheese or sour cream ups the calories, but also adds some protein.

In its natural state, compared to unfortified white rice, brown rice is a better source of several nutrients such as riboflavin, folate, iron and magnesium. It has three times the fiber of white rice.

Brown rice is naturally better for you compared to white rice. However, because some important nutrients are stripped during the process of manufacturing white rice, many companies choose to put back what they took out. Often they overcompensate. Therefore, when you compare a package of fortified white rice to a package of brown rice, the white looks like a better choice. However brown rice has the advantage of having more fiber, which is probably a bigger health benefit than the fortified vitamins, since our diet tends to be more deficient in fiber than in the vitamins white rice is fortified with.

Billions of Asian people eat white rice every day, and they're some of the healthiest people on this planet!

I love white rice, and refuse to switch to any other kind. LONG LIVE WHITE RICE!! (Esp. with lots of butter and vinegar. Sounds strange, but don't knoct it 'til you've tried it. :))

While polishing the raw rice to make it white all the important nutrients are lost.

Because the rice had been bleached and all the nutrience from the rice had been taken away or killed in the bleaching process.

Why do you say white rice is healthier than potatoes?

Nutritionally, both are pretty useless.

Rice is NOT healthy. It's all starchy and it's delicious, yes, but it has no nutritional value.

Maybe because of it's starch content being too high. Perhaps because it has been stripped of it whole grain properties and it is too easy to digest.
