Is it primarily the xtian belief system (because that is the most powerful religion in the US right now) being imposed on our society that prevents gays from having marriages or even "legal unions"? If not, what are the other reasons?

Religious belief is the only thing that makes governments recognise marriage at all. If this were not the case, people would be free to define the structure of their family in any way they pleased, rather than according to the nuclear structure mandated by marriage laws.

The quick answer is yes. I am a Christian and I feel it is wrong for same sex to be togeather. How ever being Gay is no worst than goship or seeing you brother in need an looking the other way as for as God is concerned. It is given every man and woman to seek out their own salvation so even though I am against it I also feel I dont have the right to look down on you if it is the life style you chose. But know this I would be neglect in my duty as a christian if I did not tell you That God has a problem with it and he is the only one that can and will punish you for it. Though I am against it banning gay marriage is unconstitunial and without a constitunial amendment it should be against the law.to band it anywhere in the country. Thats the truth of the matter reguardless of how Christian I am, and I do dread the day that they make it legal but we are to hate the sin not the sinner

For the most part yes it is do to religious beliefs and the fact that most people in the US think that is should not be legal. Ever time but one this has been put to a vote of the people it has been outlawed.

The Pope banned Gay marriage in the 10th century. That is the only reason it is not allowed in the U.S. It is a clear case of Congress passing laws recognizing the Christian religion and preventing the free exercise of all others, as required by the Southern Baptist church.

No...the fanatic, radical fundamentalist Christians are fighting it on a religious basis, but that is not the primary reason it has not been legalized.

One of the largest lobby groups in this country is the Insurance Industry. They are pouring millions of dollars into legislative back pockets...and no doubt the fanatic's as well...to stop legal marraige of gays. Not for any religious reason...but they would be compelled to cover them as spouses or family under group health insurance policies. Oh not to mention they would be eligible for their spouses retirement and social security benefits.

It's not all about religion guys...most of the time, that is just a cover for greed.

Basically, yeah. "Tradition" in this connection is just a cipher for "religion." We can't actually write laws based on what it says in the bible, in our secular society with separation of Church and State, so we just employ cute little euphemisms to disguise the nature of our bigotry, e.g. "family values."

But "Dust in the Wind's" remarks about the insurance industry make sense as well. I'm always willing to believe that dollars are at the bottom of most of our ridiculous, evidently irrational and absurd policies - much like the "Drug War."

No. Gay marriage would be meaningless in an agrarian pre-industrial society. This is a post-industrial society.

Religion has little to do with it. People just like to make Christians the scapegoat. The government doesn't want it either, because of all the problems it could cause with social security benifits. There are lots off polititians that claim to support gay marriage, but none off them are actually doing anything to make it legal, it's easier to ignore it,and then blame the Christians.

There is no LEGAL reason to prevent same-sex marriages. That's why some people are pushing for a Constitutional amendment--they have to change the rules so their bigotry and discrimination is legal.

Well there's homosexual xenophobia too. Since homosexuality is now more high profile it is becoming commonplace to see gays every day. Eventually this particular xenophobia will disappear through familiarity and won't be an issue any more. This is absolutely inevitable. Maybe 10 years.

Note: There is no such thing as homophobia, otherwise homosexuals would have it too. It is a fear of people different to us that in this case happens to be homosexuals. It is a lot more accurate to refer to it as homosexual xenophobia.
