You might be interested to know that, here in Singapore, 1 in 3 (that's 33.3%) of people will get cancer.

You would most probably expect to find densely populated metropolitan cities or highly developed urban areas showing up higher cancer rates, some of the most likely reasons being:

- higher stress levels (e.g. due to increased population density and a faster pace of life)
- higher levels of pollution resulting from development and high population density
- a greater propensity to consume an unhealthy diet (e.g. fast food, processed food like canned food, preserved food, etc)

Singapore fits the profile of a country that would be expected to yield high cancer rates.

People here lead stressful, fast-paced, hectic lives, and our small island houses 4.8 million people - that's 6,075 per square kilometre!!! We will soon catch up with Hong Kong, which is also extremely densely populated.

Also, our diet consists mainly of processed or fast food, as more fast food chains have set up home here, and there is no land available for anyone to grow their own organic produce.

The three main factors that involved in cancer are:

1) Genes (i.e. hereditary factor)
A person whose immediate family has got cancer is more at risk than a person whose family has had no history of cancer.

2) Lifestyle
People who lead faster-paced, more stressful lives and who do not exercise are more prone to developing cancer.

3) Diet
Some foods are known to be carcinogenic. E.g. Burnt food - food that has been burnt black. Other foods might have carcinogens in them. E.g. Polluted seafood, farmed salmon (which were fed a chemical food that was carcinogenic to humans), etc.

Of the above three points, only two are somewhat within our control - lifestyle and diet.
