If you live near a consulate then go there your self with your passport, two visa size photos and some cash and prepare to spend the day.. Otherwise hire a visa service like z-visa.com The best information about visas can be found on their website hands down..

I've been travelling to China for seven years and I use them exclusively.

You need to fill out a visa application and take it to the Chinese Embassy or one of there consulates. See the following web site for more complete information.
http://www.chinaconsulatesf.org/eng/qianzhen/t42284.htm
If you do not live near a consulate or embassy you can go to a travel agent and they can get it for you or go online to visarite http://www.visarite.com/chnConsulate.htm or another visa agency and they can obtain one for you. The price of a single entry visa to china is $50. You will pay a fee for someone else to get it for you.

You can either apply in person or through a Visa service. Your Passport must be valid for at least six months past the date of return.Instructions and application forms for a visitor visa to China can be found on the Chinese Embassy’s website at www.china-embassy.org/eng/

It normally takes 7- 10 days, however you can pay extra fee to get express service (1 working day). If you plan to get single entry visa, then the visa fee is $50.

You need to provide the documents as below:
Documents to be included with application:
1. Your valid & actual passport. The passport must have at least six (6) months validity left before expiration and at least one blank page left in it.
2. One completed Visa Application Form (Q1) with one additional passport photo (black & white or color is acceptable).
3. An applicant born in China who applies for a Chinese visa with a new foreign passport is required to submit his /her Chinese passport or last foreign passport with a Chinese visa.

Go to a travel agent with your passport & photo. Agents normally do visa applications on travellers' behalf, just pay the fee, easy.

Contact the Chinese embassy or consulate within your country. Just do a search for the contact info. The Chinese government probably has a website somewhere listing the iinfo.

I got mine through avisa service.
I'd contact them and work through them. It'll cost more, but will be easier and faster. Shouldnt cost that much more either.
