I have this car on a lease and am way over on my mileage. I don't want to take it to the dealership if they're going to charge me and arm and leg. What could be wrong with my jalopey?

That sound is from the brakes. The brake pads are probably worn down and the metal backing is grinding into the disc rotor. Better have it checked immediately, or else you might find you have to pay for new rotors also (that's about $200-400 depending on where you go).
When brakes get worn, they first have a wear indicator ...that's a squealing or squeaking noise. Then that eventually stops and the pad wears down to the metal and damages the rotors.
I had a Camry that the rotors needed replacing on because I was stupid enough to let it go that far. It cost me $110.00 for each rotor extra.

more effective than in all probability the brake pads are wiped out and think ofyou've got metallic to metallic. once you've disk brakes, you may pull off the tire and seem on the rotor. If it has groves in it, it needs to get replaced. The rotors are round 30 funds at teh elements save and pads are 20 to 50. maximum places cost 2 hundred for both the front pads and rotors. Its really some thing you may do your self or purchase the elements and pay someone 50 funds and the total will fee you $one hundred fifty or a lot less.

The best thing would be for you to take it to a place like Just Brakes or some other reputable mechanic ASAP. It sounds to me like you're pads are worn out and eating into the rotor and the longer you wait the more it's going to cost you. Do it for your own safety as well as other drivers on the road.

Take it to a shop IMMEDIATELY as you are grinding your rotors. Did the brakes not squeal? That's when you should've gone to a shop...now you're going to be paying a lot more.

Your brakes are worn out. Since you hear grinding, it's gonna be expensive because you've just killed the rotors.
