If you have been using disposable cameras, I think you will be amazed by the quality of even the low-priced digital cameras. Nikon, Canon and Sony cameras will all be better than you have been using. However, you will need to use flash for night-time shots with cheaper cameras, though they should still be better than the disposable ones.

What to look for? A good LCD display on the back of the camera so you can check out your photos, reasonable battery life (and do you want one that can take ordinary batteries if you will be away from the mains to recharge the battery?) Small and easy to keep in your pocket? No flimsy plastic bits that will break off as soon as you use them.

Good automatic settings (no-one uses fancy 'manual' settings - they're too much hassle and you end up with a worse picture unless you are a really keen photographer).

There are a lot of good digicams about, canon are usually reliable. It depends on how much you want to spend, if you're just viewing the pictures on the computer or making normal photo sized prints, you really don't need any more than 4 million pixels (megapixels). Most cameras have removable memory cards which you have to buy seperately, but if you get a reasonably sized one around 512mb, it will hold loads of pics (300 or so). Have a look at Jessops or Jacobs camera shops' web sites for an idea of cost.

Canon Powershot A460.

I have a fancy one too but also wanted something for 'snaps' with decent quality. Got it from Amazon for about £70! No looking back.

Cheap camera generally means cheap lens - however Canon lenses are generally the best at every price bracket.

Trust me, it won't disappoint.

To give you an idea of capacity, a standard photo will be about 0.5 to 1mb in size. Therefore approximately:

16MB card = 15 to 30 photos.
32MB = 30 to 60 photos.
128MB = 130 to 260 photos
512MB = 520 to 1000 photos
1GB = 1000 to 2000 photos
2GB = 2000 to 4000 photos.

Get the biggest card you can afford and then you can do loads of video clips too!

It sounds like you want a digital camera with the least amount of complicity and headaches. i recommend Canon... They have been making digital cameras since the beginning. Most of my friends are happy with their Canons. I bought a Minolta because it was cheaper than a Canon. I was not satisfied (took poor pictures in low light) and ended up giving it to my younger brother.

There are dozens of Canon models so you'll have to decide what size, resolution (megapixals) and price you want. I don't think you can get a decent digital camera without flash...

Sony cameras are good, but they use Memory Stick which is slightly less popular than Secure Digital (SD) cards.

Somerfields were doing a 6.35MPixel camera for £49.99. Comes with a 32MB SD card. The number of pictures you can get on the card depends on the picture quality you select. The lower the quality or going black and white gets more pictures on. A 512MB SD (£13.49 from Argos) will save 320 pictures on the Somerfields special.

The only problem you will have that cheaper DigitalCameras tend not to have any decent night time settings - Go for a Cybershot - they have excellent functionality and are excellent for any type of shot.
