In my opinion (and, I'm sure, by many more people); nothing. In the eyes of many others; everything. It's a matter of ignorance and lack of wanting to understand. If someone has made you feel bad for expressing yourself then you shouldn't take it on board.
Criticism can be born from so many different factors;fear, general narrow-mindedness... even sometimes jealousy, people can be envious that you are able to understand or at the very least act upon your desires which are so internally rooted. Many people are too inhibited or frightened to.
The simple fact is that if you partake in something out of the ordinary, then you leave yourself open to judgement from others.
Stay true to yourself and seek the support of people who face the same obstructions with society that you do. We all experiment, some explorations pass as a phase, others linger around until it's a lifestyle choice.
Ultimately, the most important thing is your happiness.

"If it's not normal, then it MUST be bad."
One reason why many people may think cross-dressing is wrong. Another thing is people (usually men) would wonder why a male cross-dresser would want to dress in a way that is linked to females, who are usually considered lower in power. Lack of "manliness" is flawed upon when it comes to men, who are not allowed to show signs of weakness. The concept of beauty seems to be something that people don't like to be linked to men. Oh let's not forget that based on stereotypes, people may fear a male cross-dresser is gay. Note that when I say people, this only applies to those who think and act like the above.
That's just my theories on it. I don't actually feel that way myself however and in fact it's something I'm trying to figure out how to do right now, in the south of all places.

There's nothing wrong with cross-dressing, I love to cross-dress & my wife enjoys it when I dress-up too. I believe that people who hate cross-dressing either want to cross-dress, but are affraid too and others probably have tried cross-dressing & liked it, but where to affraid to admit they liked cross-dressing.
