Job praised God alot even when the devil came against him and took all his cattle ,his family hishome and plagued himwith boles all over his body. Reason do get Job to curse and denie God and he would not.He prayed for Gods mercy and grace an proclaimed his love for God. God allowed the devil to do all that he done to him to prove a point. That JOB was Gods and would not turn away from him even the elder scorned him cause they tryed also to get him to cause they said he had sinned a terrible sin. and we all know we are all sinners. But in the end the devil looses and God rewards JOB 100 fold and more......Read the book of JOB in the OLD Testament. and you will get a better idea.

Thats what he did...
as well as live life completlely dedicated to God and to being a good person. So thats a pretty big thing on top of a massive job like herding thousands of animals.
Plus then he lost everything and had to struggle against everything as Satan took all in his life and screwed it up....

On a grander scale I guess Jobs job was also to teach all of us to remain upright and blameless and devout to God even when hardships are going on and we will be rewarded.

Although most of the book consists of the words of Job and his counselors, Job himself was not the author. The book provides a profound statement on the subject of theodicy, the justice of God in light of human suffering.

Job was a follower of God in the old testament.
The devil came to God saying that even Job couldn't resist not believing in him even if the worst things happened. God basically said 'oh yeah? wanna bet?' so the devil killed his wife and children and all sorts of bad stuff happened to him, but Job never lost faith in God because he knew the things he couldn't have on Earth, would be rewarded to him in heaven.

Owning those things gave him wealth...think of him as the Mr. Cartwright of his day (without the whole gun shooting, mystery solving thing)
