Do you know of anyplace in the greater Cleveland area that is good with teaching a 5 year old martial arts? Someplace where they are not out to just make a buck, but teach REAL martial arts. I would like to involve my entire family as well.

A word to the wise...I am not from the Cleveland area, however I am an Assistant Instructor at a Taekwondo school in New Jersey.

When choosing a school certainly make sure you can observe a class before anything else. You want to know that the teachers are more worried about teaching discipline than only teaching technique. You don't want the kid learning how to throw kicks and punches without the proper discipline because that's how kids go back to school and get into fights just because they know Martial Arts...which is why many parents have such a bad perspective of the Martial Arts. The main focus at the age of 5 when enrolling a child in ANY martial art is the discipline.

Most martail arts schools are reputable you should do some shopping around though. Martial arts instruction will open your child's mind to a whole new way of thinking however I am not able to stress enough that you be comfortable with the dojo(school) that your child will attend and the discipliune that he/she learns. I am sorry that I do not know anyone in cleveland. Might I suggest that you go to a newstand and pick up an issue of Black Belt magazine or one of the other martial arts mags I am sure that you can find an instructor to fit your needs. You may want to go to a martial arts competition to make your decision on what school to choose.

I know of No places in Cleveland, but my 5 yr old grandson started his martial arts training at 3 yrs old in Ontario. He was in Tiny Tigers for 2 years, sort of like a school, and then the last 1-1/2 years has been in Little Dragons and has his orange belt. He is doing fabulous and it teaches them much more than sport. Highly recommended for the interested child.

Your best bet is to look in the yellow pages & visit some schools (with your child). See how the instructor relates to your child & you. When you find the right school, you will know.
