Today on Yahoo, there was a picture of Virgil Hill, and the caption (article) calls him a super middleweight. The guy has been around 20 years and has never fought lower than light-heavy, he's also been no lower than cruiserweight for the longest. We need someone who cares to write about the greatest sport around.

It's too bad that boxing is no longer a major mainstream sport. It still is the most exciting, challenging and skillful sport in the world. Without one honest centralized governing body with real power to make change, boxing becomes more and more of a niche sport because of poor marketing and exclusive PPV shows that further reduces the number of potential fans. NFL/NBA/MLB is on free TV all the time. UFC has a strong centralized governing body that knows how to promote fights and forces the best fighters to fight each other. Boxing power structure, unfortunately, is fractured and thus less compelling matchups are made on a consistent basis. As a result boxing coverage is nearly non-existent in mainstream news coverage.

HOWEVER, boxing coverage is still thriving on the net.

www.maxboxing.com is the best of them all.
www.boxingtalk.com has the great Michael Katz writing for them.
www.doghouseboxing.com has the most up to date breaking news.
www.boxrec.com is possibly the most comprehensive international sports database on the net.

mrguttz, I completely agree. By the way, all the sites listed above are decent, but all of them are just short, to the point, and facts (just like fightnews.com and boxingscene.com.) (I have never read Michael Katz who was listed above so he may be good too?)

A list of credible, good writers:
Ring Magazine (always has a few)
Thomas Hauser (great writer, probably my favorite boxing writer. Read just a couple articles and you will know he cares about the sport too)
http://www.secondsout.com/usa/colhauser.cfm
Kieran Mulvaney

Dan Rafael

Bert Sugar is also very good (recently had articles on HBO but I couldnt find them. Look him up though.)

And dont worry too much about the picture yahoo captions make plenty of mistakes like that.

Boxing definately needs more blogbaba's, that's for sure, it seems the heavyweight division isn't the only aspect of boxing that lacks stellar talent. I agree with you, the commentary on boxing in today's media is second rate.

This site is excellent: eastside boxing. Its up to the minute and there is a lot of fan participation on the fans board there as well.
