I hate to say it but "real fancy" and "not expensive" in New York is an oxymoron. :) You might want to look into hotel apartments. Check out Hotel-Alternatives.com they have some real fancy ones, but your budget will ultimately determine what is expensive. Good luck!

Depends on what you mean by 'fancy' and by 'not expensive'. Old-style hotels (Essex House, Peninsula, Carlyle) usually go for $400-$500 a night. Hip hotels (Gansevoort, Soho / Tribeca Grand, 60 Thompson) go for $300-$500 a night...

It is real hard to find fancy and cheap, but I stayed at the Pennsylvania Hotel in Manhattan and it was cheap and nice-the best part was that it was close to everything.
They also had a very good restaurant downstairs.
Hey you only sleep in your room anyway?

We like the Carlton... has a Boutique/ European ambiance.... all of the hotels in NYC are expensive....but this one can be lower than some of the other ones. I also like the Marriott Marquis which is Location, location, location.... and can be a bit pricey.
