The approval guidelines are less strict for student credit cards. I would say as long as you don't have BAD CREDIT, you should try to apply for one of these offers. Since they're designed for students with little or no income (and less credit history) you'll have a good chance of getting approved-- as long as you're going to school and don't have any negative items on your credit report. If you don't receive the advertised terms and conditions-- just don't accept the offer.

Here's a great place to search and compare offers:

Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!

It isn't always that you need to have good credit, but moreso that you have to have a credit history. I was denied for my first credit card when I was at NC State University because I didn't have a credit history... I now have a card with 10% APR (which isn't a major factor to me because I pay it off in full every month) and a reasonable credit limit. You may have better luck getting a secured credit card (you make a deposit and that becomes your credit limit... usually after 2 or 3 years of "good behavior," the card becomes unsecured) or going to your bank or credit union and applying for a college card there. Depending on how many cards you've applied for, you may be hurting your score from all of the hard inquiries. Some students have a jump-start by being added as an authorized user on their parents' credit cards and already have a good credit history, even though they haven't handled a piece of plastic in their lives. You'll notice that the regular APR is nearly 17% ...most credit cards are banking on students having parents to bail them out of credit card bills and getting into a habit of paying minimum payments after college.

Credit cards aren't evil, it's that most people don't know how to use them responsibly.

First of all, no credit is better then bad credit. Second, the credit cards they offer you in college usually aren't the ones you get. They offer you these great benefits, but then give you the "Gold" card or as you put it, entry level. Or, they'll give you the card, but not the special low interest offer which is based on good credit history. The interest is too high and usually has an annual fee. Just apply for the card, they'll give you the lesser on ethat you're looking for.

Do not pay attention to all of this as they pass out cards to college students like candy. They assume that most will screw up and they will make tons on interest. They assume that if even a large portion default they will still make money.

The card companies know you have no credit and will give it to you. Because if you mess up you will have to pay a huge APR later to have one or not be able to lower it. So...... bottom line is don't mess up when you get one. And bear in mind that most employers do a credit check. If your credit is bad you may not get the job.
