I have had her about six weeks and as long as I am very attentive and take her out she is good to potty outside. But she does not indicate when she need to go outside if I am not watching her. Am I expecting too much too soon? I always offer much praise when she potties successfully outside and I only try to interrupt her if I catch her pottying inside without scolding her.

The puppy is currently about 3 months old. I've only had her about 6 weeks. We are using a crate at night and that is working.

I cannot get her to go into the crate without using food to entice her.

The crate training will help a lot. Leave the crate door open during the day, when you are with her, and toss some toys inside. Let her get used to the idea that it is her private bedroom, not a punishment.
She may be like some children, and not realize she has to go, until she can't hold on any longer, so she doesn't make it to the door in time. Take her out as soon as she wakes up, and immediately after feeding. When she goes, praise the bejeepers out of her. She will soon get the idea. Since you've only had her a short time, she may not have started training until you got her.
Have patience, one of these days she will surprise you!

6 weeks is VERY young. yes you are expecting too much too soon.
you are doing a good job, take her out so she doesnt need to do it inside. if she beings to do it inside, pick her up and take her out, even if she is halfway through.
in a month she wont want to go inside. just be consistent.
as for the training - it doesnt matter what size a dog is.
some breeds are harder to train than other though. not sure what breed she is, but most large ones are easy to train.
it will take a feww weeks at least - just keep at it.

If you take the puppy directly outside after and accident, they will start to get the hint about what you deem acceptable. Praise them every time they relieve themselves outside.
Also, getting a puppy a crate helps a lot with this, it gives them a safe place to relax and a dog will normally not make a mess where it sleeps.
It takes time and patience.

i went through the same problem and im going through it again. i have a dog kennel...a cage i call it...and i put my puppy in training in there at night so they can learn to hold their pee. eventually i let the dog out and if they peed anywhere inside...i threw them back in the kennel for a couple of days and then tried takin them out again. right now i cant keep my puppy in there for a long time cause she is so young but i have those training pads near the doors and eventually those pads will end up outside and will show the puppy oh i gotta go outside....thats what i do

Make sure to take your puppy out every time she eats or drinks anything and use words like "goo pee". Make sure to wait until she goes, she will eventually and will associate "go pee" with actually going pee. That's how I got our puppy to pee on command. Make sure to take her out a lot at first and then slowly increase the amount of time in between, making her hold it longer and longer. This is basically how I taught our Springer/German Shep. cross to use a litter box as we were in an apartment at the time. PS a little scolding doesn t always hurt (not hitting of course). Hope this helps.
