Maybe you wont speak spanish perfectly but it wil help you a lot. You have to be careful with the shows you watch because sometimes they use too much slang and it is hard to understand, but yes, watching spanish tv will help you. That's how I learned english: watching tv, listening to music.

These days you can learn how to speak Spanish over the internet. Check out this online course, it's voted as the best Spanish online course of all time: http://www.rocketlearner.com/spanish The course is very easy to follow, I was able to learn Spanish in just 3 months.
I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a Spanish language teacher but that would have cost me over $800 per month. Good thing with this internet, $800 it's a lot of money for me.

I'm from Argentina, our version of Spanish language is a bit different from Spanish spoken in Spain, Mexico or other places, I think you should try watching movies on DVD translated to Spanish, in these translations you can learn what it is called international Spanish without slang, and if you learn Spanish as it is used on those movies every person in Spain or Latin America will be able to understand you. Shows on tv used to have some slang. I'm learning English and movies on DVD are helping me a lot.

When I took Spanish a few years back, one of the activities my instructor suggested was to watch the spanish channel. It does help if you combine it with study and practice speaking & writing.

It really helped me. I watched this show called bienvenidos which was full of these 30 second comedy sketches. So I had to pay attention and improve my listening skills because if I missed something it was off to the next sketch before I knew it. Of course the venezuelanas were a little distracting at times :) but it really forced me to listen and helped immensely.

It will certainly help, but it will be difficult for you to pick up all the peculiarities of the language and the grammar difficulties. I suggest a course or a stay in a Spanish speaking country (such as Spain, or a Latin American country - except Brasil!).

Its very useful... and can help you a lot. Find a TV with "Closed Caption" to be easy for you to follow. Avoid the "News" shows, in the begining... and prefer the movies.
The spell, the pronunciation in movies is a little bit easy, because the producers have the idea about the distribution of the movies overseas, than, the actors are careful with the correct and easy language, most of the times.
good luck!

CNN en Español is good to get used to Spanish indeed. Of course you always need to have previous knowledge of the language. It works for all languages.
