i have been gong to the gym for about 3 months about 3 times a week give or take as i do other forms of exercise too and have a pretty healthy diet as I calorie count. for the majority of the week i have under 2000 calories a day, usualy under 1500 if im not feeling down. This included lots of fruit and veg etc

My gym routine is bike, cross trainer, stepper, rower, weights, floor exercise then 30 mins swimming

I know i might be putting on muscle but i have put on 2 pounds and not lost too many inches. Its really starting to get me down.

Im 23, female, 5'5" and 11 stone 7 (about 158 pounds i think) but i am big framed

jim r, you obviously know very little about women if you think someone of my height can't have a large frame!!!

Im not saying im massive but my dad was a hooker in rugby and my mum a hockey player....both well built for their game and i, as expected, have developed a large frame due to my genes

You need to up the tempo a bit. If you stay doing the same exercises for the same amount of time each week then you arn't going to progress any further. Try adding an exra activity or an extra hour in the gym each week and you will be sure to see the change!

you say you are calorie counting but are you counting every single one?
also are you counting how many calories you are burning off? dont use the calorie counters on the machines at the gym they arent specific enought, get a heart rate monitor and keep exact track of your calories out.
if you are already cutting your calories down to 1500 then working really hard and burning off say 500 cals? then you are only getting 1000 cals and thats not enough for your body (1200min) and so your body will hold onto the fat and you wont lose.
when i wanted to lose weight (and i have lost over 2 1/2 stones and kept it off for over a year) i used a really good website www.weightlossresources.co.uk which has a really sensible approach. it builds a programme specifically for you and tells you how many cals to eat to lose your goal and has a diary for you to record food and exercise. i found it invaluable. even if to just give you an idea of what you need to do, you can do the 3 day free trial.

dont give up, it will come off if you put out more than you take in but still take in enough for your metabolism to function properly

good luck!

Sounds like you're putting on muscle to me. However, you might need to change up your routine a bit by slowing down. Your body has gotten use to all of this activity. Why not skip a day or take a leisure walk one day just to shake things up a bit. If you haven't read the book "SugarBusters" I would suggest it to anyone. You will learn how your body uses food and energy and what foods slow you down. You're just in a holding pattern right now. Your height and weight sound fine to be and I admire your exercise program!! That's alot of exercise. Don't get discouraged; just think of something different to fool your body into letting go of a few pounds. Godloveya.

My dear-I will first congratulate you for the effort of going to the gym trying to loss weight not many can be faithful and devote to such a vigorous effort----if u wish to call it so! But please try and see if u can pick any advice from the rest answers but I most be very sincere with you try and see a specialist or just ask the gym monitor or whoever is in charge of training people at the gym--you do not need to pay for this"asking" well, it all depends on the gyms policy anyway because many I know have a kind of consulting or question and answer time especially for those with special needs like yours----Good luck and please don't give up!Cheers!!!

I know this will sound funny to you but you sound like your not eating enough, this is why your metabolism has slowed down, you need to eat regularly, healthy meals, plus i think you may benefit from joining a slimming club, i know that might sound total mad to you but, it all well and good to exercise, but you also need to eat properly too, and although you say your eating healthily which i am sure you are, try writing down everything you put in your mouth for a week, then see what you are really putting in your mouth, i bet it not a lot, increase your fish veg fruit and water and watch the weight drop off.I hope this helps.

Go to Weight Watchers.

I was the same wight as you but a little shorter and I lost 2 1/2 stone with them 7 years ago (I'm 31 now). I've never put it back on even though I don't exercise as much as I should any more. and I've had a baby.

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter your stats and it will tell you how many calories a day you need to maintain your weight. take 300-400calories off that number and that's how much you need to lose weight.
eat 5-6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones.
5-8 servings of fruit and vegetables a day.
8 glasses of water a day.
4-6 times a week cardio work out for 30-50min plus light weight training.
no junk food, no sodas, no white flour (white bread, pasta, cookies, cakes etc)

If you are building muscle don't forget it weighs more than fat does - so you might increase in weight. You are losing inches and at the end of the day you are doing the best thing, you are exercising which is all anyone can expect of you.

Well done!!

Be truthful with yourself. Keep a calorie diet diary. You will be surprised, Oh I only had one spoonful of Bubble and Squeek, maybe, but you also had a spoonful of heavy cream etc. If you expend more calories then you take in you HAVE to lose weight. Big Framed? A very unlikely situation for some one who is 5'5". Quit fooling yourself.

keep going. Don't give up!!

think of it like your studying for an exam. You have to study everyday to do well in an exam and to learn more and more.

You can't just do it for a while. Yea you may not learn much at the beginning and you may feel you have not learnt much at all, but after studying for a long period of time your results will get better and better.

The key is NOT to give up.
