I recently received video files of my newly born nephew in Australia. I have tried to figure out how to get them to play, but nothing seems to work. They are, allegedly, in AVI format - I have however discovered they are encoded using a high compression H.264 codec, which I have tried to install to Windows Media Player with no success. This has proved really frustrating and no matter what I use, eg nero digital, nothing seems to play the picture of the files - just the sound plays. Any ideas on how I can get to view the clips?

*As an additional remark, they have included a text file with comic subtitles that needs to be added to the video clips, sort of like their funny interpretation of what the baby is trying to say...how can this also be added to the file, so I can watch both at the same time?

Are you sure Nero Digital won't accept it? Try making sure that you open the file with Nero Showtime directly (Windows Media Player doesn't always recognise other players' codecs) and see what it does. If it doesn't, try a program called ffdshow. It's a freebie that contains tons of different codecs that Windows Media player most generally recognises and uses.

They added a seperate sub file? They do realize that they can add this to the video stream itself and keep it in the AVI container, don't they? I'm not sure how to make a video file play with a seperate subs files--encoding, yes... playback? Uh... no.

If all else fails, shoot them an Email telling them
1) Not everyone on the internet are video encoding enthusiasts... you shouldn't need a degree to figure out how to play back video files on a computer.
2) It doesn't work. Suggestions?

Two solutions:

Play the file in Quicktime 7 - it has H.264 support built in.

Download the H.264 codec from the net. Here is a link: http://www.afreecodec.com/win/26/h264-codec/

Never used this one, so read the installation carefully to see if there is other junk installed with it.
