You are very kind to be concerned about an animal being harmed.
Large dogs usually have a higher incident of problems with hips, legs, such as labrador retrievers.
A chihuahua is very strong although they look delicate. The upside is that they are very faithful. The downside is that they bark constantly. I think they are adorable. A neighbor has a long hair chihuahua who is so precious, but doesn't bark as much as most chihuahuas I have known.
Don't worry about getting one. They are a lot of fun to own.
From a dog lover.

It is true that chihuahuas are very fragile because of their small size, however I have owned these tiny dogs for over 35 yr and I have never had one with a broken leg. I did have a couple of pups at different times that fell fromm the back of the couch and injured the leg, but did not break it. They were in a splint for a few days and everything was okay. Chihuahuas are wonderfully. I highly recommend them to someone who loves the small dogs! Chihuahuas can live to be in their 20's!

I believe you would just have to be really careful with the little tiny ones. I imagine they are pretty sturdy for their size, but you just can't play really rough with them or take them on super long walks. However, chihuahuas come in different sizes, and some are a little sturdier looking than others. Plus, if you like the looks/personality of a chihuahua, you might want to get a mix breed. I have a chihuahua/weiner dog mix, and she is adorable, but still very much a chihuahua in personality. In all, definitely worth considering still getting one. I have never heard that they injure really easily, and their personalities are just great.

I would keep a chihuahua as an indoor dog. The're yippy, but not completely untrainable. Just get the dog that suits you best, and if it's a chihuahua, so be it. Dogs are tougher than you think, and at least it's not a bulldog...those things get hurt so easily.

chihuahua's are fragile dogs. I have a long coat male that is almost 2 years old, he and my boyfriend rough house a lot, and no broken bones yet, knock on wood!!! One thing I will suggest is do not use a regular collar, but use a harness!!!!!!

Just be careful and try not to let him get stepped on. Also jumping off the couch or bed can lead to injurys.
