Because they want you to pay more money for it...Try Open Office, this is a better, free alternative to Microsoft Office (which is not free). It has Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint versions which actually work better than Microsofts.

Im not so sure you question has been answered yet. You wanted to know why they didnt include such a vital component, and the answer is terribly simple. Microsoft Office has NEVER been included with operating system software. Never has, never will. It makes sence to me why they don't. Vista was designed to stop piracy, along with it's other programs including Office. XP Office Pro you can get anywhere hacked, why would they let you put a pirated program on your Vista System? The concept is to stop people from stealing. Is it right? Maybe they should have warned you you were going to lose all your Office capabilities, especially to those who are running thier systems in Offices and would imediatly need Office. But they didnt.
So thank you I will stick to XP and continue to use this since there are no real problems with XP for me at this time, and use the pirated software, it's cheaper anyhow

Because Vista is an operating system, while Word is part of the MS Office suite. No version of Windows has ever come with Word or Office, they are two completely different products. It's like asking why Vista doesn't come with World of Warcraft. Office is a separate product that you have to pay for. Many years ago if you purchased a new computer you could get Office bundled on it for an extra $400 or so, although most came with Works. Few manufacturers offer to bundle Office these days, although some still offer Works.
You don't have Word on your XP disk, since Word and XP are two different products, and no version of XP comes with Word. You may have WordPad, which comes with all versions of Windows. It also comes with Vista. Go to the Start menu and look under Accessories. Your disk with Word on it is probably an older version of MS Office.

I could never understand why the Dept of Justice pursued its antitrust case against MS on the basis that they were giving away Internet Explorer free (just like Netscape and other browser providers!) ... when the real mischief is the way that they design "upgrades" so as to force customers to buy the same thing again and again.
With access its even worse. Any developer has to use at least the latest version as a client in order to make any changes ... and then when they work on any other clients it forces those clients also to upgrade in order to use whats been developed for them.

XP never came from Microsoft with those programs either, although some computer manufactures did bundle them with their new computers.
