What is a Christian ?
A Christian is a follower of Jesus Christ. A Christian does not follow the Physical Church, he or she is a member of the Body of Jesus Christ.
Jesus warned us about the Physical Church and the Council, who would you believe, Jesus or the Physical Church, Jesus or the Council.
Don't take my Word for this, read the Word of God for your self. 1 Chron 17:3 ---- WORD OF GOD ---- "Go tell David my servant, thus saith the Lord, ---- Thou shall not build me a house to dwell in"

The only other "Christian" Church that was around in the beginning was the Greek Orthodox church (the Jerusalem Church was Jewish). All other Christian denoms branched off of Catholicism (this is all recorded history). They are Christians... whether Protestants recognize them as such or not.
Now, as for Inquisition - Protestants were in on that too. History shows the Protestant churches in England were burning people alive as well for being "witches". The Catholics were not the only church that had a hand in the massacres that are shown in history.
Now - people today, no matter what their religion is, shouldn't be blamed for something that happened a long time before they were born. Unless they are indulging in that type of thing now.
As for "fleeing the tyranny", I'm not quite sure I get that, when the "pilgrims" settled in the new world... they kept all of the same religious convictions and used them here as well (Salem Witch Trial, ring a bell? and the Salem witch trials were Not the first to happen in america... it's just well-known because more ppl died there than in Pennsylvania, where a handful were hung for alleged witchcraft).

I wouldn't say that Catholics aren't Christians. They founded the Church that Protestants broke from. The reason why you are placed with Catholic atrocities during the Crusades ( I think that's what you're referring to) is because the Church had not divided yet. I do not hold any Modern Day Christian responsible for what happened in the past. However, religion is one the greatest sources of violence around the world or at least it is a major factor in some major conflicts. Blood doesn't have to be shed for conflict to exist. Look at this board and your question and you have an answer to your own question. And hand above made a very good point.

Stop being silly. It was never religion that was the motivator for the Puritans- it was the fact that they had just presided over killing off an English Monarch and establishing a Republic- and the UK elites were very worried about it happening again- so they sent them away.
Then there was the issue of allegiance- the Protestant English view the Crown as head of Church and State as divinely ordained by God- whereas Catholics view the Pope as Christ's representative on earth-thus- they see the Pope as having more authority than the King.
Fact is- many Catholics still live in the UK- like even noble families such as Camilla's ex-husband.

The fact that you follow Luther's novel ideas instead of the teaching of the one true Church Jesus Christ founded for you, and the fact that you have rejected many of the beliefs of orthodox Christianity really isn't anything to brag about. You are trapped in a manmade tradition of conflicting, contradicting denominations, the very existence of which is a direct violation of the stated will of God, "that they all may be ONE". Anyone with a modicum of historical knowledge knows that the Catholic Church was the only Christian Church on earth for most of the history of Christianity. Before Protestants criticize the teachings of Christ's own Church, they should come to terms with what constitutes truth within their own tradition, where no two denominations teach the same thing and doctrinal chaos reigns - the direct result of rejecting the authority of Christ's Church and trying to foirce authority on a book compiled by that same true Church. Christ's own Church still teaches and worships in unity and in truth after 2,000 years, and will do so until the end of time.

you left the truth to live in your own truth?
Now, people may point out that Christians have at times resorted to violence wrongly, including the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition. But the comparison is not completely apt. First, Christ Himself never advocated forced conversion and slaughter of unbelievers. Muhammad not only advocated it, but personally cooperated in it. Second, in the case of the Crusades we should be careful not to buy all of the anti-Catholic propaganda being sold. Do you know why Christians fought the Crusades? Because Muslims first forcefully took over Christian lands and persecuted the Christians living there, and controlled Christian holy sites. It is true that some Crusaders did some despicable things in a spiteful, vengeful way. But the Church herself never condoned, let alone ordered, these excesses. And as for the Inquisition, if it was as bad as some anti-Catholics claim, it is odd that there are records of people requesting transfers of their cases to the Inquisition from the secular Spanish courts. No doubt, some horrid things occurred, but it is more accurately understood as the unfortunate result of the weaknesses and sin of individuals, not the official teaching of the Church.

From where I stand, there's little difference between catholicism and christianity, after all it's the same deity and more to the point it's the same morality.
Also from my perspective you didn't flee to the new world to escape tyranny - you brought it with you. The American Indians would disagree with you too.
As to why christianity is being blamed... Catholicism has 'cleaned up' recently, which leaves christianity holding the proverbial hot potato.

Oh, yes. I'm so happy that Christians came to America and murdered and eradicated the culture and people of Native Americans. Now, Native Americans are reduced by living on small plots of land given to them by the government.
Yes, it's great that Christians forced Native Americans to give up their culture to become Christian. I'm sure that many Native Americans today are so grateful to Christians.
Now, let's look at Black people. The cruelty and brutality of the treatment of Black people done by Christians is horrifying.
Isn't it a bit weird that those same men who raped, killed and tortured Black people went back into their huge plantation home and read the Bible?
Isn't it a bit funny that men called Native American people savages and killed them and went home to read the Bible?
So, you see. Christians don't have a peaceful past either. Christians did kill off millions. They were the Native Americans and Africans.

People are saying that catholics are christians and is totally untrue,
dont lie to cover your tracks, if catholics arent christians where did protestantism come from? Jesus didnt make it, and it didnt fall out of the sky. History shows catholics ARE christians, despite what some lying christian twit says. I suppose hitler was atheist huh? thats the latest lie from christians. Not a true christian is not only a cop out, its a LIE.
why are you being blamed? well for one, the protestants did do bad things as well, so even if you seperate/deny catholics as your own, theres still the matter of the witchtrials, killing off native americans, africans etc.

Catholics were the first Christians.
We are still Christians.
The Roman Catholic Church has done some very terrible things over the years, I will not deny that.
As long as a person accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior they are a Christian.
