Mrs M: You read the entire 589 page Nag Hammadi Library, doing a detailed reading of the 19 page Gospel of Phillip. Then had time to come on line and post an answer? That is truly an awesome feat!!! Not, you understand, that I would question your honesty.

jason h: In Hebrew she is El Shaddai, the double breasted god. This is translated in the Old Testament as Lord. The Hebrew language does not denote gender, it is infrared. Double breasted god infers the female. In Gnostic Christianity the point is made abundantly clear.

Achiest: The Nag Hammadi collection was discovered barred in the sand of Egypt in 1945 Scholars, not your piastor, say those copies date from the second century and the Gospel of Thomas in that collection is known to be older that the biblical ones. Sorry your pastor is in error.

John w: Accepted by the church or not is irrelevant. They are authentic documents from the first and second tear followers of Jesus.

Wisdom i: You are absolutely correct. I did take it out of context. My only interest here was to make the point that The Holy Spirit is female. Have you read, "Jesus the Magician, Morton Smith?" Dr. Smith sights a number of rabbinical writings from the first century that identify Jesus' father as a man called Pantra. They called Jesus, "Yeshua ben Pantra." Too much to post here, but Dr. Smith's book is well worth your time to read.

The verse you cite is taken out of context. If you would have read the entire passage you would have seen that the author has a specific point in mind. Who his father is makes no difference to that point. The Gospel of Philip is a Gnostic gospel. It can only be understood within the context of Gnostic belief, it makes no sense in the context of orthodoxy. In Gnosticism there is a distinction between Jesus the man, and Christ the Spirit. Jesus is seen as a man who would have had two earthly parents, the virgin birth is rejected. Christ, on the other hand, is a spirit that works through Jesus and is the son of the true God. When Jesus is baptized by John the baptist, it is at that moment that Christ descends on Jesus and the two become one.
It is in this way that Jesus Christ is seen as both man and divine. I think that is the distinction the author is trying to make in this passage.
Also, the Holy Spirit is female in Gnosticism, and is sometimes referred to as the Holy Mother.

I was going to try to answer this question until I yahooed your reference.
Unfortunately, after completing a throrough search on the above-reference, I could find nothing beyond this quote in the Nag Hammadi Library to support the claim that the Holy Spirit is a woman.
Mainly I did find a bunch of double-speak and rhetoric. It's kind of difficult to have a debate when there is no supporting documentation or basis of your theory.

In the first place, the Holy Ghost is a man, not a woman. In the second place, the Holy Ghost has to be present in order to be in the presence of God the Father.
Third, Jesus is the literal Son of God. Jesus is the only begotten of the Father in the flesh. God is the father of his spirit, the firstborn of the Father, and his body, the only begotten.
In order for Mary to be in God's presence and for God to conceive in her, the Holy Ghost had to first come over her and transfigure her to a spiritual level.

God, our Father in Heaven was the father of Jesus Christ. That made Jesus the Only Begotten Son of God, in the flesh, and therefore as a God he had the ability to take his life up again after the crucifixion and be resurrected. Mary was his mortal mother, the part making Jesus mortal so that he was susceptible to death via the crucifixion.

Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, YES. God became flesh as John 1:1 says. Jesus' earthly father was Joseph because Joseph "raised" him up as a child....but Jesus was always God...He just became like you and me, in human form and was born like you and me, and grew up the same-only He had the mind of God! And there was no sin in Him.
2 Corinthians 5:21
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Matthew 1:20
But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

The first mention of the gospel is in Genesis 3:15, it mentions that the savior will come from "her Seed". Other prophecies specify that the savior will come from a virgin. If Jesus had any other father than God, the bible would be a lie.

The Gospel of Phillip is not holy scripture. It was never accepted by the church. Jesus is the Son of God.

If the story of Jesus has suddenly shown up today would be called an Urban Legend. But because it's from an ancient book no one can verify its veracity. Since the story has way too much in it that contradicts the laws of the universe, just as much as the stories of Hercules, it's a safe bet that Jesus is just as mythological as Hercules is.

According to the Bible, it IS the Holy Spirit. Jesus came to earth to die for our sins and since he according the Bible the son of God, he had to come to earth in human form. Think of it this way--if you were to go deep sea diving, you just can't go in the water and expect to survive long--you would have to put on a dive suit and an oxygen tank. Likewise, Jesus who is spirit, had to put on an earth suit so that He could be seen and survive in this "atmosphere" we call Earth. Since Jesus had to experience what we experience, that would also include childhood, Joseph had to provide the financial support for him until he became of age.
