I have a Pflueger Trion that I love, coupled with an All Star medium heavy rod/fast tip that I got at ***** Sporting Goods. I also have a Shimano Curado (the older model) that is excellent, as well as a ABU 6500 on a heavy rod (muskie) and a Cabela Prodigy on a medium heavy rod.
I like ABU reels but can't vouch for the XPS rods. Wonder who makes them?
Here's a site that rates fishing equipment, including the XPS rod:

Hello Steve,

First off that's a real nice combo and I am a big fan of ABU round reels. The suggestion I would make is to buy a low profile reel because they fit the hand better while palming your reel. This will greatly improve your casting, pitching, flipping accuracy which will drastically improve your catch. The rod you are looking at it very good for the price and will team up nicely with a Shimano Citica and the combo only costs $20 more. You get a lot more technology and more fishing satisfaction for such a slight increase. Look into a 6'6" MH 10-20# line 3/8-1oz weight. This would be a great pitching stick for soft plastics and jigs. I have 4 of these rods myself and find them to be quite good. I often use heavier line like 65# braid and never had any problem with this rod. My favorite line to use with a setup like this 12 or 14 # Trilene Mean Green XT for worming or 17# for heavier cover jig fishing.
Bass Pro combos are a great way to build up your bass arsenal and everyone that fishes has at one time or another owned at least one.

Here is the combo I am referring to: XTR66MHT

I would get a 7ft medium action pole with that reel. For line i would use shakespeare cajun line 8lb.

i not a big fan of baitcasting reels. I like spinning reels. They are much easier and in my opinion way better. On the other hand, i would prefer a baitcasting for smallmouth.

good luck!
