This is in response to my learned friend who argues tax exempt status for churches because they "do good". Isn't it good to eat macaroni and cheese?

I've always enjoyed a fresh, piping hot serving of mac and cheese more than an hour in church.

A little garlic salt and tobasco sauce does wonders for it, too.

The macaroni, not church.

It's very good to eat macaroni and cheese, but Kraft doesn't exactly give it away or hand it out for donations. They are a profit based organization, they actually sell a product. Churches don't charge it's membership. They function on the charitible donation of the congregation. So the church itself is tax exempt. The church staff however is not exempt from paying taxes.

I am a Christian. I think it is time Churches need to start paying taxes. We should not be seen by the secular world as getting a free pass on anything. Everything should be taxed without exemption.

Tax exempt religions has to do with keeping religions free from government influence - very important!

Kraft foods - dude, you know their owned by Phillip Morris - not exactly a product that I would describe as "all good."

yes because they are a for profit orginazation. Churches are a nonprofit org, plus they do good. The key issue as you already know is the nonprofit status. nice try

For profit vs. not-for-profit

But personally, I'm not a fan of the mega-gold- chaired-pink wigs kind of Churches. Keep it simple. Ours does, thus we can help more people.
