Should I call the parks and rec department? Can I just show up at the high school when noone is using it? I live in Grayslake, IL.

Try your community college or high school. I run on both without a problem. I'd call first if there is a gated fence surrounding it though.

As long as it's a public school you can use it. I wouldn't recommend private institutions; they can get picky. Because it is track season, you might not want to go between the hours of 2 and 5pm. During the days sometimes there will be gym classes that might use the track but I've been on the track during these times and no one has ever had a problem with it. The only reason I'd call ahead is to check where you are allowed to park and as someone else said, to see if the track is gated. but again, if it's a public school chances are it won't be gated.

Here is a link to Grayslake High, Central and North. Hopefully they're close to you!

Most high schools have tracks. A lot of people think that if they get to a track they will be able to run. Nope. Running is the same no matter where it is. Just go to runthere.com and you can make running routes and see the exact amount of distance you cover. Also, if you're just starting running. Just try to run 2 miles really slow.. i'm talkin really really slow... like you could have a comfortable conversation at this pace. Then just try to slowly build up. Also, its ok to take breaks and walk a little bit. Just get the distance in and eventually you'll be winning national 5ks in 13-14 minutes ;) :D wether or not you are a male or female

The local high school is probably the only public track in your area, where I live there is a huge sports center complex where they have an indoor and out door track, but there are very few of those in the country.

i think of there remains one interior the citadel Harrison section on E 59th St. additionally, they are not tracks, yet there are quite a few greenways to boot to the Monon. the diverse undemanding colleges have a million/5/ mile tracks at the back of them which at the instant are not seen from the line. additionally, the diverse center colleges have tracks which at the instant are not saved locked. via the way, the music on the highschool in Nashville, IN, has an illustration welcoming the regular public. regrettably welcoming the regular public isn't the case for diverse the highschool tracks in Indy. maximum are saved locked and/or have not any trespassing signs and indicators published.
