I was thinking about this the other day. Charitable organization are tax free, so if a church is actually doing what it is supposed to, then no, it shouldn't be taxed. One of the main purposes of the church is to help the poor and needy. I don't know if all churches actually do this, but if they do, they qualify as a charitable organization. They aren't for profit. The workers get paid, the building gets paid for and the rest is supposed to go to the needy. I know that the church I go to does do that. They help out the widows in the church too. That isn't as much of a need today as it was when Jesus was around, but our church still tries to take care of them.

I know that almost all churches are dead, spiritually, BUT some churches do a lot of giving to the poor and destitute. A couple of years ago, when my mother was first diagnosed with MS and about to lose her house, her church gave her money to make it for a month. After that insurance kicked in and then later, Social Security Disability started. I would hate to think of them being NOT for profit and being taxed. When disasters happen, there a lot of churches who step in to help the needy. It's not just the Red Cross that step in.

EDIT: I mis stated myself, I meant that I would hate to see them other than non-profit.

Churches should not be, never should have been tax exempt.

Jesus himself said "Give to Caesar (the government) that which belongs to them" during a question on the very issue of taxation.

However, they could be covered by similar laws for other organizations - when they donate goods, products, money etc... to general purpose (not their own) events, there should be a tax write-off.

I disagree,

Because Churches give tons of money to help the community. and Belief in God was here before our Government.

Pastors salaries should be taxed, and I think they are already!

most churches do not make money. Their lives base on donation. Their work is for the morality of this society. Therefore, I disagree!

Agree. Churches these days are run like corporations and despite some of their contributions to society they use resources just like everything else.

The next richest entity out
side of Government is the Church ...

Of course, many will deny this ...
So why not tax them ...
I mean c'mon ... Render unto the USA,
what is the USA and unto God what is God ...

I know ... the word is "Caesar!"
But it got your attention ...
And they have what ... money ...

Watch the "thumbs" down count go through the roof ...
