A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in psychiatry and is certified in treating mental illness.[1] As part of their evaluation of the patient, psychiatrists are one of only a few mental health professionals who may prescribe psychiatric medication, conduct physical examinations, order and interpret laboratory tests and electroencephalograms, and may order brain imaging studies such as computed tomography or computed axial tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography scanning.
A psychologist is a scientist and/or clinician who studies psychology, the systematic investigation of the human mind, including behavior and cognition. Psychologists are usually categorized under a number of different fields, the most well-recognized being clinical psychologists, who provide mental health care, and research psychologists, who collect information on people's minds.

Probably psychiatry. Psychiatry is where the doctors are. Psychology is also the study of the human mind, but there are few people who earn a doctorate in that field.

they are NOT the same thing.
a psychiatrist treats illnesses that have their origins in chemical reactions/physiology of the brain that can be treated with medication.
a psychologist treat emotional/personal issues that are NOT from chemical/physiological problems with the brain and are generally not trearted with medication (though this varies).
You need to see your local (regular) doctor first. He might prescribe you some antidepressants first and if he is good, he will then send you to a psychiatrist to make sure you are on the correct thing and to check up your other issues. The psychiatrist will check on the depression pills and check out your eating disorder. He may then keep you seeing him or send you to a psychologist. It depends exactly what the problem is.
Bottom line - go see your regular doctor and bring up the issue with him first.

Psychiatrists are MD's. They prescribe drugs. If you want more counseling and therapy w/o medication go to a psychologist. They have PHD's. Both are very educated but one focuses more on the mental aspect and the other focuses more on chemical imbalances. I would try the psychologist first and if that doesn't work maybe you could see a psychiatrist to help with any chemical imbalance that might be contributing to your problems.

Psychologists cannot prescribe you any medication... that's about the largest difference. I'd ask your primary care physician which he'd recommend... and get some referrals because you don't want to go to any Joe Schmo with a license

if you don't want to be drugged up then I would see a Psychologist. The Psychologist will be able to get to the source of your problem whereas a Psychiatrist will just treat your symptoms with medication and mask your underlying issues that are causing those symptoms.
