I took in a lost kitten a couple of days ago, and my house alsready has some fleas that my previous cat(now, lost) left behind. I hear that kitty is too young to take any medications or flea control products. Any "home remedies" that will get rid of the little punks?

I adopted a 3 week old from the shelter and she was infested with fleas. They put a small amount of Advantage on her and she was fine. Take her to the vet to see if they can. Don't let her keep the fleas, they will give her anemia and she might not survive. Fleas are very serious for kittens.

like the above answer..dawn dish soap is perfect for this situation. Dawn dish soap is used on wild animals that get covered in oil or anything like that..it is very gentle on animals and their skin. Normal flea shampoos for KITTENS have the warning that it shouldnt be used for a kitten under the age of 6 weeks I believe. Don't take the chance. Just use the Dawn Dish soap in some luke warm water. Let the dish soap sit on the kitten for a couple minutes (only a couple minutes as you dont want the kitten to get to cold) and then rinse off...make sure the kitten stays warm while drying off and even use a blowdryer on a LOW and WARM setting. Then of course treat your house for the fleas so you dont have the problem again :)

For a kitten that young, you can't even bother with a flea collar. Your best bet is to call the veterinarian (which you should do anyway with a kitten that young, since they need special formula and care) and ask about some alternatives. Powdered lime sprinkled on the ground is good for keeping fleas away, but it's not meant for indoor use. Ask your vet if there are any products on the market that you can use to spray your house that won't make your kitten sick.

Call your vet for recommendations. Pretty much nothing that is sold OTC is safe for kittens in one way or the other.

Yes, it is likely that there is nothing that you can do until kitten is 8 weeks old. Your vet needs to establish the age of the kitten. Once it is 8-9 weeks old, there are medications that are very effective that can be used.

I've seen too many people injure kittens with their 'home preparations'. PLEASE see a vet or give up the kitten to a shelter so it can be treated. Kittens can quickly become debilitated from blood loss with fleas.

simple table salt on your carpets or furniture overnight (vacuum the next day) will greatly reduce your flea population my brother-in-law had similar problems with a very young kitten and the vet gave him front line even though it is not recommended by the mfg. he said just a drop on the back of the neck would do the trick and it didn't hurt the kitten. the salt really works like a charm because fleas live in carpets and lay eggs there. good luck.

You need to see a vet. A flea infestation on a small kitten can cause death. It is an emergency situation. A two week old kitten should see a vet anyway if it has no mother present.

No, you have to comb them out with a flea comb. I've had to do this. Watch for signs of lethargy, and check the gums, if they are pink and healthy, not pale. Because fleas will literally suck the life out of your kitten, causing anemia, and then organ failure. If you can't do this, have your vet do it. But you'll have to do it everyday untill he/she can use flea deterrant applications.

There is one OTC flea shampoo that is safe to use on puppies, kittens, nursing and prenant animals. It is called De Flea, and can be found @ your local pet supply store, such as PetSmart.
