My Dr. has me on 1mg of Lorazapam for anxiety about my son's upcoming surgery. She also just prescribed 10mg of Ambien taking 1 each night for sleep. I guess they're safe to take together or else she would've prescribed it. but, how can I expect to feel while taking them both together???? I mean, am I going to be able to function? I've never taken these kinds of prescriptions before. I'm kind of nervous. Serious answers please.

They're both short term prescriptions.

My advice to you is from a medical standpoint and from personal experience. If you can take them separately, do so. Take your Lorazapam in the AM or noon and your Ambien at night. If you mix Ambien with anything like anti-anxiety meds or alcohol, you may have some real interesting side effects like sleep walking. I did this: went in the kitchen and ate, took a bath, talked on the phone, and other crazy things without knowing I did them. But I slept very well afterward....:)
If you're uncomfortable with the Ambien, you can always pop it in half and take 5 mg. and see how that helps. I think it might be a wise thing to do.
Thanks for asking a question that helps others too. Godloveya. (praying for your son)

You didn't specify the mg strength of the Lorazepam. A customary dose for anxiety is 0.5mg to 1.0 mg. Ambien can be given in 5mg or 10 mg. I would recommend that you take the Ativan at bedtime alone first to see how it effects you and how you feel in the morning the next day. I would NOT recommend that you take both medications together, at the same time, at night. In fact, I would recommend that you take them a minimum of 3 or 4 hours apart. IF (and only if) the Lorazapam doesn't allow you a good night's sleep by itself, then try to take the last dose of Lorazapam around 6 or 7pm and the Ambien at bedtime. Try the Lorazapam at bedtime first. Since these are both new prescriptions for you.

Did your Dr. say to take the lorazepam at night or in the morning? I think since you are not use to taking these types of medications you will have a hang over effect in the morning. I would do the lorazepam in the morning if it appears to be to much half it and that will make you a 0.5mg the Ambien can be taken 1 hour before bedtime and if you wake up feeling hung over you can also break it in a half and make a 5 mg. I am surprised your Dr. didn't start you out at these smaller doses then bumped up up if you needed to. I have worked in a pharmacy for 17 years it is not uncommon to take them together however for someone who isn't use to it you will probably feel that hang over feeling. Good luck on your son's surgery.

I would definitely call a pharmacist and ask if they can be taken together. As far as the medication, I've never taken Ambien, but I have taken a Lorazapam whenever I have alot on me and it really does the trick. I am able just to relax and it helps me sleep, too.

Hello, just wanted to let you know of a miracle pill that puts you to sleep, available over the counter, is actually very very beneficial for your health, and is only 3 bucks!! I had trouble falling asleep for years. I would lay in bed, and think and think and think for hours before I could fall asleep. It was literally driving me crazy!! I had tried every over the counter sleeping pill on the market and nothing helped. I turned to Nyquil and that did the trick. I had been drinking Nyquil almost every night to go to sleep until I stumbled upon this miracle sanity saving nutritional supplement named MELATONIN. And you can buy it at any GNC health food store. I advocate GNC because the melatonin they use goes through 85 different quality checks before its bottled. Buy the sublingual melatonin. The kind that dissolves underneath your tongue tastes like cherries and it’s good for you!! I was shocked at the effectiveness in putting me to sleep. If you have any questions before you buy it the sales associate at GNC should be able to answer any questions you have. It comes in 1 mg, I take 2 right before bed. The only side effects are weird dreams for the first two nights if any at all. I have been taking it for years and it’s truly been a blessing. And it has more antioxidant effects than Vitamin C and Vitamin E combined. You must take the sublingual kind from GNC otherwise it might not work because of quality and potency, should be taken at regular bedtimes in the evening. Must try the GNC brand at your local mall.
God Bless
P.S. after you try it and it works don’t forget to tell others about it. You could be saving someone else’s Sanity

It will be better to take Lorazepam or Ativan during the day when you are feeling anxious but u dont need it at night when you are taking the Ambien. If you still wake up in the middle of the night with uncontrolled anxiety, then you can take Ativan or Lorazepam, otherwise you dont need it at night as it might make you too drowsy in the morning. Better yet consult your pharmacist if you feel that you need both of them at night.

Call your doctor or pharmacist. You might be able to handle them together depending on your height and weight but they are both strong sedatives. I would double check just to be on the safe side. It's just a phone call away to the Dr.'s office or your pharmacy anyway.
