cat with toileting problem?

hey, i have a kitten that is about 6 months old and for some stupid reason when she goes to the kitty litter tray she does her business and doesnt get the drift of covering it up. she'll sit there and scratch and dig at the side of the tray and on the ground around her tray but never on the actual litter and she'll do it for 5-10 minutes. it stinks the house out cause she wont cover it over, dont know how to teach her to scratch at the kitty litter and not the plastic and the floor.

she does her business in the tray and knows she is meant to cover it but just doesnt realise that she is meant to cover it with the kitty litter

Peeing is an animal's way of marking her territory and she may not want to poop because it will erase her scent. So if your cat is like this, just buy another litter box and put it some place far away from the first one so she will not look at it as another box to pee in.

Automatic litter boxes are for people who don't cherish the chore of cleaning litter boxes each day. These boxes are not cheap but a great idea when time is of importance.

These self-cleaning boxes use robotic trays where your cat's waste is automatically raked into a sealable container shortly after your cat uses the litter box. Have you tried using a bigger litter tray? A tray size about 1.5 times the length of the cat is best. Also, make sure you are using enough litter. Litter has to be about 3 inches deep. More is better.

If that doesn't work. Try using the litter tray that has a cover. That would help with the odours.

Try changing the litter. Mine hated the litter. It got stuck in her paws and would do the same thing. We mixed a heavy texture "cheap" litter with the fine grained "aborbing " clump kind and it works. We also put a kitty hood on the box and use the baking soda in the box.

We used up the large CAN of it and now premix into it with smaller packages.

Try a covered box. Also, sprinkling a little baking soda into the litter helps with odors. But, this may not work. My 17-year-old cat never ever covered his business; he did the same thing your kitten does no matter what I did. Cats will be cats.

You can't teach a cat to dig in the right spot. Try buying a wider tray so that she can't reach the side from where she goes. It might encourage her to cover her mess. Also you can try buying a litterbox with a cover, they help to hold in the smell until you can clean it.

the queen (mother) may not have taught her to do it. they learn to do it from her, maybe try doing it every time she goes to littler box since the mother isnt around anymore. shes young, so it will be easy to train her.
