My dog had surgery two weeks ago and I'm very concerned about what he eats as he recovers.

It's safe but its not a balanced diet for dogs....there are many better pet foods available.

If he was eating Pedigree before surgery, you should keep him on it for the time being. Changing a dog's food can upset their digestive system very badly, which is not the best thing to do while he is recovering from surgery. Pedigree was not involved in the recent recall.

I agree with other posters that there are better quality dog foods out there, but I'd wait to switch until he's fully recovered. Once you do switch, do so gradually to avoid digestive upset.

I agree with paintedrain2's answer. A higher end food will not have the fillers that most store brands have, like Pedigree. When a food doesn't have the fillers, the dog can digest it much better.

I use to feed my dogs Pedigree, until I did some research. Then I switched to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. Even though the Chicken Soup costs about $35 for a 35 pound bag, the dogs were eating less, and I went through almost half the amount of food, so I saved money! Also, their coats are much nicer and even the Vet commented on how healthy they were!

Well, good luck to you! Sorry I went off on a tangent!

Pedigree is among the lowest of the low quality in dog food. While, yes you can feed it and your dog won't get sick off of it, it's not real healthy and can really affect the quality of life down the road. We fed our dogs Pedigree for around 14 years, until last June when I went gung-ho with dog food research. And I can tell you - they'd be more comfortable now in their senior years if we'd had them on a better food like Blue Buffalo from the start. And my entire family has the feeling they'd be much healthier.

It's never too late to change though. www.dogfoodproject.com can help you out some finding a good food for your dog.

Pedigree food for dogs is safe ans was not part of the recent nationwide pet food recall. The safety of products not involved in the recall was validated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on March 23, 2007.

You might want to look into better quality food, such as Blue Buffalo, Canidae, etc.

Try to avoid foods with corn, wheat, or by-products as the first ingredients listed.
