If a person is otherwise healthy, symptoms seldom appear before the hemoglobin (red pigment) drops below 10g/dl.

The first symptoms will be tiredness and palpitations (awareness of the heartbeat).

Shortness of breath and dizziness is common.

If the anaemia is severe, angina (chest pain), headache and leg pains (intermittent claudication) can occur.

Besides the general symptoms of anaemia there will be unique symptoms in pronounced and long-term cases of iron deficiency. These will be especially noticeable in the tongue and throat and include:

a burning sensation in the tongue.

dryness in the mouth and throat.

sores at the corners of the mouth.

an altered sense of touch.

a smooth tongue.

in extreme cases the nails can become brittle and spoon shaped with vertical stripes and a tendency to fray.

or a 'pica' can arise - an insatiable craving for a specific food, eg liquorice.

brittle hair.

difficulty in swallowing.

What symptoms are linked with anaemia?

As anaemia causes a shortage of oxygen, the main symptom is usually chronic tiredness and palpitations. Other symptoms you may get could include:

Pale appearance
Shortness of breath and dizziness
Fainting
Angina
A red, sore tongue and a reduced sense of taste, this is usually only a symptom with folic acid and vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia.

Anemia goes undetected in many people, and symptoms can be vague. Most commonly, people with anemia report a feeling of weakness or fatigue, general malaise and sometimes a poor concentration. People with more severe anemia often report dyspnea (shortness of breath) on exertion. Very severe anemia prompts the body to compensate by increasing cardiac output, leading to palpitations and sweatiness, and to heart failure.

Pallor (pale skin, mucosal linings and nail beds) is often a useful diagnostic sign in moderate or severe anaemia, but it is not always apparent. Other useful signs are cheilosis and koilonychia.

Press your nail, if it doesn't go back pink really quickly, you could be anaemic.

The symptoms are usually tiredness, lack of concentration, general weakness. Its very easily cured with iron supplements or just improving your diet.

Light-headed and feeling faint. My aunt is anaemic. She passed out once because she went without eating breakfast or lunch the whole day. My best advice is to eat something to keep your blood sugar up.

tired, sleeping a lot, head aches, no energy, can pass out, dizzy spells. If you think this is wrong you need to go to your doctor and have blood work done. They will give you iron supplement or tell you what you need to do.
