We just bought a car for our 17-year old daughter and went through this same process.

First, avoid the VW - they are not highly rated for reliability.

Pick up a copy of Consumer Reports or go to their website and find their list of recommended cars. Buy something from that list.

We bought our daughter a used Mazda 6 with a 4-cylinder engine and it seems to be a solid, roomy, safe & reliable car with a good government crash rating.

I would avoid very small cars like the Scion xA or Rabbit, Toyota Echo or Civic or Mini as they offer less protection. I would also avoid small SUV's with high ground clearance and a narrow track like the RAV4, Honda CRV & Jeep Wrangler.

Cars to consider would be the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry or Celica, Scion tC, Subaru Impreza (WRX), Mazda 3 or 6, or Nissan Sentra. As with any car for a new driver, make sure it has a good crash and rollover rating, not too much power, an automatic if possible, good neutral handling, low insurance and good gas mileage.

That automobile does not go well with any one underneath 30 years historic with a measure. I am sorry, however I understand for a reality that you're going to come to be in an coincidence in that. SLK's are WAY too speedy for anyone who's new to forcing. You must keep on with a fundamental automobile. Plus it's been tested that in case your father and mother purchase your automobile (in particular whether it is steeply-priced, and seventy five,000 is WAY WAY beyond steeply-priced for a primary automobile) you're 70% much more likely to get in a destroy to your first four years of riding on the grounds that you did not paintings to get the automobile. Therefore you do not care as so much for it. How approximately they purchase you a five,000 greenback automobile, that's essentially the most that almost all of father and mother could pay, and supply me the 70,000 in order that I will pay for tuition, lol.

Volkswagen Beetles have maintenance problems. The Jetta is a better choice for both maintenance and safety. With a 16 year-old, your main criteria for a car should be safety. Teen drivers do not have all the decision-making skills that adults do and are more prone to accidents. You can review safety ratings at Consumer Reports" website.

NO SUV. Those are just out of the question. NO SPORTS CAR. You will be fighting your boyfriend to drive your own car. So get something mid-sized and cute. Something automatic unless your from the country and you parents taught you on a 5 speed. Good luck

Small automatic shift with very high safety ratings and low repair costs.

Wander down to the library and look over the consumer reports "best car" issue

You dont want to buy a tiny car for a teenagers first ride.Nor do you want to buy a large gas gusling car that rides alot of other people in it. You will want something midsized,, reliable, and fairly affordable to maintain. Buy used. Then when she gains more experience and confidence move into something alittle more stylish.

i am sixteen and my parents gave me a 1999 ford explorer. it is still in good shape and it has been used. i like it because i feel safe in it because of its size and then how my front and back bumpers can take anything.. EXAMPLE: My friend turned right infront of me and hit my bumper...i got no dent...she got a huge dent on the side of her car (she drives a volvo) those are also safe.
