I would get a water dog. Since you love to swim, then make that happen. A social animal is Socialized by you.
Labs are wonderful and HYPER dogs. Go to breeder and talk to them.. Often they will help you train a puppy yet you may want a grown well mannered dog. good luck>
I actually would "borrow" a dog and dog sit for a week to get the honest feel for the pet.
I have always owned very large hunting/sport dogs 60#'s + and I have a small children and travel a lot, so we tried out several small breeds to see which was best for us. That is what we wanted this time.
Well a mixed mutt is what I ended up with, (kept in contact with breeders-they called me, since I had no intent to breed or show) and ironically it was the two breeds I liked best in one dog. An oops at a dog show....and a Winner for me! So go figure.
He is all ours, we look forward to years of joy with our little dog! Oh yes We are all going to "puppy traing boot camp" very soon. Ironically he is well trained and we "humans" need some help. LOL

apparently as I was so rudely told not long ago by a poster, theres a diffrence between Large Breed and Giant Breed. I guess theres a label for everything around here, I suggest for Large breed, I would go with Labrador, Golden, Standard Poodle, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, German Shorthaired Pointer, English Setter. IF you like exercise and activity and swimming. They are all sociable and smart, easy to train, but all need lots of exercise and strong ownership. If you dont mind a GIANT breed get a Newfoundland, Irish Wolf hounds (not good swimmers but love exercise and goot to train) or maybe a big Mastiff. Despite my getting thumbs down, I know alot of Mastiffs that like to swim, they are not as easy to train but make great companions. I love em.

You are a swimmer, dedicated to exercising your dog and want a social highly intelligent large breed and not overly worried about grooming. Sounds like you are looking for a golden retriever. Loves water and people, highly intelligent, is very easily trained and loves to please. Needs regular exercise and will love to go and do anything with you. Needs regular grooming but is not an overly difficult dog to groom.

May I suggest a Great Dane? They are intelligent, easily trained, love human company, are eager to please, and many love swimming!
The down side to getting a puppy is that they go through phases of chewing and will, happily, chew your shoes, furniture, pillows, anything they can get their little teeth on, even if you supply plenty of appropriate chew toys and bones. Much like babies, they seem to discover their world by putting it in their mouths. Puppies grow very rapidly and must have the right balance of nutrition and fats to grow properly.
If you don't want to risk your personal belongings, rescuing an older Dane is always a great move. There are a lot of Great Dane rescues all over the United States and most usually have some adolescent Danes needing good homes. I have had three fantastic males each of whom I adopted when they were two years old.

Are you looking for a large breed like a Golden Retrieveror Labrador Retriever or something bigger, like a Great Dane, Mastiff, or Saint Bernard? No one can pick out the right dog for you. I would suggest doing some research- so the book store or library, or check out information online. Search until you find the breed that best fits your lifestyle, and then go from there.

Check out the dogs at your local pound, humane society, the different breed rescues or the different dog rescue places.
There are a lot of good dogs being euthanized every day and you may find the love of your life there. It is worth your time and effort and you could save a life & get a very good dog.

Weirmaraners.
Very loyal, intelligent, hunters, guard dogs, social, and real characters. Loving too.
These are great dogs but they do need space and love to run. These are not for apts or condos and they need lots of exercise.
Many of my relatives own them and I have been around them alot and love what I see. They are the best large breed I have been around.
Stay away from these:
Rottweilders
Great Danes
These are agressive dogs and not much fun. Dogs love me but these breeds are the exception. They are not the best pick.

I have a boarder collie. Mine happens to be bigger then they usually are but they are highly intelligent dogs and they love to play and run. He's very sociable. This type of dog is used to herd animals on farms and such. Boarder collies are great dogs that would be my suggestion. Good Luck!
