The removal of all existing teeth and the placement of a denture is very common. These are called "Immediate Dentures" and the procedure is preformed routinely for the patients comfort and quick recovery. The dentures are made prior to the extractions. The teeth are removed under local or general anesthesia, it's possible to have some sutures placed and then we seat the denture. Patients are advised to leave the denture in as it acts as a bandage; it applies pressure to help control bleeding and swelling. Patients return to the office the next day where we remove the dentures allowing you to rinse your mouth gently and we check the healing progress and make any necessary adjustment to the denture. Then in about 6 months we'll have you return to the office for a "denture reline." This 6 months time allows your tissue and bone to settle into a more "permanent state" so you won't experience as much change in the mouth over the next few years. This reline is done from a new impression of your mouth after the tissue and bone has settled. The reline can be done in a day so you won't be without your dentures for long.

It's considered to be a much better procedure to have done, rather than to have a few teeth at a time removed and wait on the denture to be made while you heal without any teeth. Either way a reline will be needed several months later after everything settles in your mouth. If you have concerns or further questions, talk with your dentist. This is an important step and should be thought through thoroughly so you may make an informed decision about your dental care. Most patients do well with the immediate denture placement, they like "getting it over with" as well as the healing and adjusting time.

As I said earlier, discuss this with your dentist and he will help to guide you. Good luck and I hope I've helped you to understand the process and the reasoning behind it, a little better.

Yes. I had 10 teeth removed on top and a denture put right in. The dentist was there for me daily if I needed him. And I did. If I felt a sore spot, I could go in and he would instantly fix it. It was wonderful. I had that denture for over 20 years.

I found another great dentist when I had to have it replaced. He took an impression, made a temporary plate that I wore for over 6 months to make sure it was just perfect, then he made the permant one. Have not one minute's problem since.

I am getting ready to have 6 teeth extracted on my lower and 2 implants with a denture. I am having the same dentist do this one. He is taking the 6 and putting a temporary in....I will have that for several months, up to a year. Then we will do the implants to hold the lower in place as this is the problem denture for everyone. Finally, when that is complete, he will make my final denture.

I did not have any problems whatsoever with any of my dental procedures.

Hope this helps.
